Activation (10 mins)

Organization:

20x15 area

5 yard scoring zone

2 teams of 6

Instructions:

Player 1 from the red team attacks the goal across from him but can only shoot / score once they enter the scoring zone (inside the coned area).

Once the ball goes in the goal or wide the next player from the blue team attacks the opposite goal, once again only being able to score in the coned area. The red player would immediately recover to defend after his attempt on goal and look to win the ball back from the opposing player. The game is continuous.

1 point per goal

2 points if the defender can win the ball back from the attacker.

Coaching Points:

  • Speed and angle of recovery run.
  • Can you force the attacker away from goal.
  • Can we get close enough to slow the attacker down or impact their attempt on goal.
  • Pressure, position, patients.
  • Body shape and ability to block when needed.

3v3 Recovery #1 (15 mins)

Organization:

As Above

30x30 area

2 teams of even numbers

Instructions:

The red team must connect a minimum of 2 passes before dribbling around 1 of the 3 cones at the opposite end of the field. Once they go around the cones on the far side, they are able to attack either of the two goals on the field. 3 blues would chase after the red attackers and attempt to win the ball once they go around the red cones. If they are able to recover and win possession back, they can back the mini goal on the far side.

1 point per goal for the attacking team

2 points per goal for the defending team

2 rounds of 2mins

Rotate teams

Progression:

See next slide.

Coaching Points:

  • Speed of recovery run
  • Slow the attack down if possible.
  • Be prepared to block shots - expand leg / body.
  • What area do we need to recover to?
  • Can we get into a compact shape if we get behind the ball?
  • Engage the ball carrier as soon as possible.

3v3 Recovery #2 (15 mins)

Organization:

As above but with new starting positions

30x30 area

2 teams

Instructions:

The 3 red attackers make 2 passes before dribbling around one of the 3 cones at the opposite end of the area from their starting position. One blue follows the attackers but does not need to run around the cones. 2 blue immediately begin to recover from behind the attackers once the dribble around one of the 3 cones. The reds look to capitalize on the attacking overload and score in one of the two mini goals. The blues attempt to recover, win back possession of the ball before counter attacking to the mini goal at the opposite end.

1 point for the attackers when scoring a goal.

2 points for the defenders when scoring a goal.

Play two 2min rounds.

Rotate teams so they both attack and defend.

Coaching Points:

  • Speed / angle of the recovery runs
  • 1st defender must engage the ball to deny space.
  • Body shape to help teammates identify visual cues.
  • Can the defender delay the attack and create a 1v1 situation to allow time for the other defenders to recover.
  • Can we get into an organized compact shape protecting the appropriate areas of the field to deny penetration

3v2 into 1v1 Recovery (20 mins)

Organization:

2 teams of 6 or 7 dependent on numbers.

40x40 area (full quarter of the field).

3v2 in central areas into 1v1 channels.

Instructions:

The game begins in the central area with a pass from one of the red attackers into their forward in the middle of the area of the grid. Two blue defenders step out to depend in a 3v2 against the red attackers. The reds attempt to score in the large goal as quickly as possible. The central reds must now react to recover and defend in the wide channels.

  • Angle of the recovery run to get behind the ball / impact the blue attacker.

6v6 SSG (20 mins)

Organization:

40x40 area

2 even teams of 5 players with GK's

both teams play with 2 wing backs 2 center midfielders and 1 forward

Instructions:

Two teams of 6 players normal game rules with the exception that there are no corner kicks within the game. If the ball goes out of play for a corner the team that won, the corner will rebuild the play from their Goalkeeper. This rule also applies when a goal is scored. Once you have a shot on goal and you miss the target, or the goalkeeper holds the ball the player that took the shot must now sprint around one of the two cones beside the goals before rejoining the game. This will allow the attackers to have a quick overload for a short period of time and force the attackers to work on their recovery runs.

Coaching Points:

All previous points for earlier in the training session.
