Welsh way Principles
Understand when and how to stop the opposition playing through, around or over.
Pitch size and Organisation.
- 44 x 60 yrds
- 8 v 9 including GK's. Attacking overload. DEF 1-4-2-1 (1-4-4-1-1), ATT 1-2-3-3 (1-4-3-3)
- 2 Large goals
- Flat markers and cones
- Balls and bibs
- 3 x 4 min blocks
Head coach - Coaching the RED team
Red team objectives,
- Fast pressure on the ball
- Protect the middle
- Stay narrow and compact
- Stop split passes
- Protect the space behind.
Assistant coach - Managing the BLUE team
Blue team objectives.
- Play through, around and over.
- Ball speed
- Risk taking
Explanation.
The ball begins with the blue goal keeper. The blues will look to pass there way through, around or over the reds to score, no max or min passes implemented, will need managing to get the best out of the session. As the session progresses, if the reds score a goal allow them to start with the ball from there keeper to keep it realistic, but try not to lose the whole idea of the session of defending lines. (4 mins)
Defenders.
- Work on distance between each other to restrict passing through the lines.
- When and how to press. Look for the triggers, bad pass, bad touch...etc, All press together not just 1 pressing.
- When you press, can you force the play wide to win the ball or force a mistake.
Goalkeepers.
Can both goalkeepers look to keep a good distance between themselves and the defenders, supporting a higher position when play is up field and moving backwards with the defenders, keeping a good distance at all times
Also the goalkeepers need to be available to help switch play with their feet also, so again the need for a good starting position when the play is further up the field.
Progressions
1) Free play to continue from the general session (4mins)
2) A low block defending (4mins)
3) Back to free general play (4 mins)
Challenges, conditions and targets.
- Time restriction for the reds striker to shoot
- Reds score from a turn over ball they score 3 goals
- Blues score 1 goal for going around or over and 2 goals for a pass through the middle.
Progressions.
- Use only the touches you need not want.
Key Points
Out of possession:
- Stay narrow (protect central areas) - apply pressure on the ball as it travels. Stay in a narrow triangle out of possession (as shown)
- Prevent Split Passes
- Force Play Wide
- Leave furthest man unmarked - travel as the ball is travelling
- Minimise box entries, stop crosses.
In possession.
- Play through , around and over
- Interchange positions
- Ball speed
- Commit opponents
- Width and depth
- Risk taking.
Interventions
Concurrent,
Terminal
Coaching Process.

Coaching positions.
Head coach could start on position A. Although through the practice he can rotate around the pitch to positions B, C & D. The head coach may also enter the field of play to get another view of the game or to offer concurrent feedback on both positive and negative aspects of the session. Or walk throughs to explain any situations that need addressing.

SSG - Defending Lines (10 mins)
Welsh way Principles
Understand when and how to stop the opposition playing through, around or over.
Pitch size and Organisation.
- 28 x 20 yrds split in to 3 zones, 10-8-10 yrds.
- 5 v 5 v 5. 15 players
- Flat markers and cones
- Balls and bibs
- 2 x 4 min blocks
Head coach - Coaching the Middle group
Middle team objectives,
- Fast pressure on the ball
- Protect the middle
- Stay narrow and compact
- Stop split passes
- Protect the space behind.
Assistant coach - Managing the Outside groups.
Outside team objectives.
- Play through, around and over.
- Ball speed
- Risk taking
Explanation.
The Red team will defend the middle zone for 2 sets of 4mins, 4 mins unopposed and 4 min opposed
Coach/Server gives a ball to blues to start they can only go through or around the red team. Objective is to get the ball to the opposite side(yellows). The blue's and yellows will look to have 4 passes before looking to switch play,(4 mins) this will help the session principles allowing the defensive unit to stay narrow and compact and shuffle as a unit as the ball is moved side to side.
When the person opposite a defender has the ball he will put fast pressure on the space towards the ATTACKER, when the ball is passed on the defender will retreat back to the defensive line and the next DEF will close the space down with his ATTACKER. The furthest defender from the ball will look to drop a little deeper off the defensive line to look to cut out any diagonal pass. When a defender presses the ball the 2 DEF either side must be mindful of the space he has left and close the space to stop any quick passes being put throught that area. (like a one two within a game scenario). Defenders will look to keep a 2-3 yrd distance between them
We will look to do this for 4 minutes.
The second 4 minutes a red DEF can enter the attackers zone to press the ball, the red defenders that stay must be aware of the gap the defensive player is leaving and close it, Can the defender who enters the final zone arch his run to force play a certain direction so as to create a trap.?? No restriction on passes in this period. If the ball is intercepted by the defending team , play restarts with the coach serving the ball in to a random ATT end and play goes from there.
Challenges, conditions and targets.
- In first 4 mins the attacking team must pass the ball 4 times before attempting to switch play.
- Final 4 mins Defending team can press in the outside zone with 1 defender only. Look to cover and maintain balance in the shape. No restriction on passes in this period
Key Points
Out of possession:
- Stay narrow with correct distances between defenders, roughly 3/4 yrds
- Prevent Split Passes
- Force Play Wide
- Leave furthest man unmarked - travel as the ball is travelling
In possession.
- Play through or around.
- Ball speed
- Commit opponents
- Width and depth
- Risk taking.
