Field Layout

Field Layout - Example Setup is for 12 people (6 Red Squares, 6 Yellow Squares).

Boxes are 10x10.

Once we get to relay races or passing, players will team up with the partner across from them.

Each grid will have a Blue and a Green cone at the back of each box (Will explain in next exercise).

*The only reason for the different color teams is to give a visual of the person they are teaming with.

Speed and Agility

Player will start at the top of the box and their ball will go between the Green and Blue cones at the back of the box. Every player in each box will race each time. I would go about 4-5 turns in each round and then give a 45 sec-1 min 15 sec water break. These can be very tiring for each player and it is very hot outside. Once again, mostly every exercise I make a race to make it fun or competitive.

1. Coach yells out a color Blue or Green, player sprints and circles around the color cone, then sprints back to the top of the box and then turns and sprints to the ball. (Coaching Point can be get to the ball quickly, quick turns on a dime, be on toes for coach to start play, etc.)

2. Coach yells out a color Blue or green, player sprints and circles around the color cone, then sprints back to the top of the box and then turns and sprints to the ball. Once they have gotten to the ball they will do 5 side hops over the ball.

3. Coach yells out a color, player sprints and cirlces around the color cone, then BACKPEDALS to the top of the box and then sprints to the ball.

There are many different variations that you can come up with to be creative. Once again, I would do rounds of 4-5 and then take a water break for 45 sec-1 min 15 sec.

As the players start to get tired, I usually make it a relay race with their partner across from them. One person must finish the task before the other grid goes. This is a fun way to make it a team game and also add about 10-15 seconds more rest for each player.

Dribbling

Very similar to Speed and Agility, but now each player will dribble with the ball starting at the top of the box. I will still make it a race and at some point make it a relay race between each partner. You can be the judge of what best fits your group of players.

1. Player will dribble around the color cone, back to the top of the box and then turn and dribble to the endline.

2. Player will start with 5 scissors around the ball before they leave, get around the color cone and back to the top of the their box.

3. Dribble around the color cone, back to the top of the box, and back to the endline (all right footed) (then do the same amount of rounds all left footed).

4. Dribble around the color cone, back to the top of the box, turn and to the middle of the box. Then first one to 5-15 juggles (depending on age). Don't make it too difficult for level or some players will be less likely to participate.

5. 5 foundations, dribble around color cone, turn at the top of the box and back to the back of the box.

So many different variations. Please do as many as you please to stay on time and you can change the variation however you should like.

Coaching Points can be anything related to dribbling. Turning, surfaces of the feet, when to take big touches/when to take smaller touches, etc. If you want to make them do a specific turn or move that is fine. Me personally I try to give them specific instruction on maybe one particular thing, but try to let them be creative as well. So, just balancing the two and understanding the age is important as well.

**Remember working with younger players that switching one variation or getting one coaching point across is very important. As you start to get to 2-3 coaching points, the coaches talk gets longer and kids are less likely to perform the exercise correctly. It is still something I am trying to get better at and will honestly never really perfect. Just something to keep in mind to keep players engaged.**

Passing

One ball per partner. Many different passing variations and you can make a race if you would like. Sometimes with races you want to make sure you are not teaching them to rush the pass, but normally accuracy/efficiency will win the race.

1. Partners start with 6 passes straight across to one another. After 6 passes, player will receive on the half turn, dribble around the blue cone, pass back to teammate, teammate will dribble around blue cone, pass back to teammate, dribble around the blue cone, pass back to teammate, dribble around the blue cone, pass back to teammate. Done.

2. Reverse the order and make them each receive pass and dribble around blue cone, then each pass/receive/dribble around the green cone, and then they end on 6 consecutive passes.

Once again, these are just two examples and you can change the variation a bunch of different ways. Be creative and understand that if one of them doesn't go exactly as planned that it is okay (trial and error is the best way to learn better social distance training methods).

Coaching Points - Proper passing technique

- Taking 2 touches to be more accurate in passing.

- What is receiving on the half turn? Why do we want to receive the pass on the half turn?

Questions in these sessions can be hard to come up with different with social distance training, but still will allow the players to stay engaged and learn at a faster rate. Incorporating these questions in to these social distance trainings is something that I am still improving on.
