Dribbling Warm Up

Dribbling Warm - Up:

SET-UP

Set up cones about 20 yards apart. Place players at the cones. Minimum 2 on one side, 1 on the other, but can have 2 and 2 to even out the numbers.

Side with the most players start with the ball (one ball per line set-up)

ACTIVITY

Player with the ball will dribble across to the other player waiting. Once they get across, they will then stand at that destination cone - the other player will then take the ball and dribble across, etc.

PROGRESSION:

1.) Light touch dribbling with one foot.

Toe pointed down and in, controlled dribble.

Continue for 3 minutes, encourage them to increase their speed with each rep, while also keeping the ball close (larger stride).

2.) Inside/Outside touches (One Foot): Alternate inside/outside touches across.

Stance should be low, keep ball underneath them, ball should move in a zig-zag motion. 3 minutes.

3.) Rollovers.

Face sideways and roll the ball over across your body usng one foot. 3 minutes

Gates

Small-Sided Activity (20 Minutes)

Setup:

Place random gates (2 cones abut 1 yard apart) throughout the field for players to dribble through. Make enough gates so players are not colliding (about 1 gate per player).

Activity Progression:

1.) 1 minute game of dribbling.

Have the players try to dribble through as many gates as they can in 1 minute. Count and see who had the most. Try it again, and encourage the players to beat their previous score by 3 gates. Coaching points - dribble with head up to find the next gate quickly - explode with speed after exiting gate.

a.) Now play two 1 minutes games, but players must do: A pull back between the gates

b.) Inside Cut

c.) Outside Cut

2.) Same as step one - now add two to three players who start without a ball.

Players will play 5 one minute games of trying to get as many points as possible in ONE MINUTE by dribbling through gates - points will accumulate for each minute. Players without a ball will try to steal a ball from another player to try to dribble through gates. If your ball is stolen, you can win a ball from any player on the field to resume dribbling through gates. At end of the 5 one minute games - player with the most points wins!

COACHING POINTS: Dribble with head up to be aware of defenders. Sheild using your arms and body. Change directions to evade defenders.

3 Goal Game

3 Goal Game

Set-Up:

3 goals set up on each end line.

Objective:

Players will play 3v3, 4v4 depending on numbers. Object is to score by dribbling through one of 3 goals across from you. Team that scores will then go into the waiting position behind the goals, while the new team takes its' place. If no one scores after 2 minutes - change both teams out (so one team is not standing for a long period of time).

Coaching Points:

The addition of teammates means players should recognize when to dribble and when to pass. Recognizing 1v2 and 1v1 situations.
