Breaking Lines Omnidirectional Success (10 mins)
Specific Practice; In Possession Breaking Lines
Illustrate a practice that is specific to breaking lines, encouraging players to play through / around or over. How can we exploit the space available to us to achieve success going forward breaking lines quickly.
Organisation / Area Size:
- Traditional 9v9 area 95x43 yd (LxW).
- Inner area 50x43 (LxW).
- x2 teams 8v8 including GK (x2 set of colour bibs), x1 maverick player (x1 alternate coloured bib, plays for team IP).
- x2 full size goals.
- x20 balls split between the two goals.
- Timings; Play 4 x4 minute periods with 1 minute interval progression breaks.
Explanation:Each team will start where the bibs are pre laid out in a 4v3 scenario in the inner area, maverick player to play for team IP and goalkeepers also start with IP team. Can the team IP combine successful passes to break the lines of the opposition to play the ball through to the GK. The flow of the practice will progress with insertion of a ST for both teams:
How:
Coach explain the practice and conduct a walkthrough on a tactics board first, followed by a walkthrough (variation of inclusive player understanding abilities). Lead coach will work with both teams for the duration of the practice and 4 minute periods. For the purpose of OA2 the lead coach role will look like the below:
- 1st x4 minutes Period; Phil
- 2nd & 3rd x4 minute periods; Elliot
- 4th x4 minute period; Phil
1st ball of the practice will be played from the lead coach with every other ball then played from a GK. On the 1st progression with the inclusion of STs the ball will always start with the team that has success for example; if the red team score in the blue goal then the reds will start again from their goalkeeper.
Conditions, Challenges & Targets:- Conditions; Players are locked in their zones to start with, whilst the maverick player is locked inside the centre circle.
- 1st challenge; Breaking lines to play a successful pass the goalkeeper and then retain possession and transition the opposite way.
- 2nd challenge; Can we encourage to play through the lines before going around or over?
- 1st progression; Include a ST for each team in the end zones vs the GK. Each team will now also be given a direction to score against a GK. Success is rewarded with a goal and will see that teams GK start again.
- Targets; As per 1st challenge and 1st progression success is rewarded by success of either the GK receiving a pass and later on with a goal scored.
