Defenders Attacking Within An 8 VS 6 With 1 GK

Method: Defenders Attacking With An 8 VS 6 With 1 GK

  • The goal is for the red team to play out from the back and dribble the ball through one of the three gates on the halfway

Coaching Points:

  • Number 1 (GK) Place the ball in the middle of the line on the 6 yard box for kick outs, offer a supporting angle when your team is in position, keep scanning all sides of the pitch as you can see the bigger picture.
  • Numbers 2 & 3 (Fullbacks) Stay high and wide, offer support, set up with an open body shape so you can play forward
  • Numbers 4 & 5 (Center backs) Open body shape so you can play forward, offer supporting angles for when your team has possession, positive touches to step forward into the game.
  • Number 6. Move away from the play at times in order to leave space for 8, 10 to come down into, other times 6 can come towards the ball to get onto it and bounce the ball to the opposite center half in order to open the game up
  • Numbers 8 & 10. Push higher up the pitch in order to stretch the gaps in between the lines of the opposition, lots of rotations with each other in order to create space and lose the defenders

  • Blue Team
  • Narrow and compact
  • Shift across the pitch with the player
  • Wingers apply pressure on the fullbacks as the ball is travelling to them
  • Number 9 wait for the CB to take a few touches forward before curving your run and pressing
  • Number 10 block the pass into the midfield
  • If the ball gets bounced to the opposite CB then the number 10 goes and applies the press and the 9 hooks back around and takes up the position of the 10 and blocks the pass into the middle

Reflection:

Looking back on this session/phase of play, some things I was happy with was my orientation on the whiteboard, I felt like I gave good detail to the players, we had good success in terms of playing out and getting through the gates we achieved this many times. Some things I was not happy with was some players were comin too deep and crowding the area instead of moving away from the play and creating more space, but that also has to come from myself as a coach to be able to step in and fix the shape if things are not to my liking. I would like more rotations between the 8 & 10 in order to get free and again create space. During my debrief I felt like I wasn't very specific with my questions, I feel my questions were too broad which led to the answers from the players to be very broad too.

Looking back on this
