FUNctional Activity: Foot-volleyball (10 mins)

Session Organization:

30 cones, either Head Tennis Nets or a combination of poles/string, 12 balls, 2-4 portable goals, 2 sets of bibs.

Foot-volleyball Grid Size: Create two foot-volleyball grids (size dependant on ability levels). Each grid will need a net.

Explanation:

Divide players into teams of 3.

This is a game with volleyball rules.

Play starts with a volley from behind the baseline (server).

Receiving team are allowed 3 touches and only one bounce in total to get the ball back over the net.

Scoring System: Volleyball Rules - first team to 10 points wins.

Progression: Change number of touches/bounces to cater for your player's ability level. Can make this a paired juggling task (one player each side of net) . Can also make it a co-operative game, recording longest rally between pairs or teams. Allow for rotations of teams every couple of minutes.

Evaluation: Encourage players to be comfortable using foot/thigh/head/chest. Praise well controlled first touches and the setup for the next touch.

Recognition Phase: Game (10 mins)

Session Organization:

Equipment as listed previously.

Grid Size: Create a 30m x 40m game (as a guide).

Explanation:

Divide squad into 2 teams: 6 Blue (plus GK) versus 4 Red (plus GK) for a squad of 12.

Teams to play normal game rules for the first 5 minutes.

To maximise game time, there is the option for the GK on the overload team (Blue) to start/restart play (place footballs near their goal).

Scoring System:

Regular Rules for first 5 minutes - all goals worth 1 point.

After 5 minutes, reward 3 points for a goal scored by overload team (Blue) after completing 5 successful passes. Incentive designed to maximise first touch practice attempts. The Red team will get 2 goals for scoring a goal after they win it back.

Progression:

Reduce/increase number of passes for bonus points.

Rotate roles of attacking/defending players where appropriate, also look to rotate the roles of the two keepers so that they get a chance to play the ball in.

Evaluation:

Encourage players to take their first touch "on the move" towards goal.

Praise well controlled first touches that set up next action.

Encourage players to take the first touch "out of their feet" to open the body up quickly.

Intervention: Skill Breakdown (Attacking) (5 mins)

Session Organization: Equipment as previously listed.

Grid Size: Create 15m x 7m grids with 2 small side gates (light blue) as shown.

Explanation:

4 players per grid in 2 teams, one player from each team at opposing ends.

Game starts when Blue player passes to their Blue teammate.

As pass is played, the Red defender from the side the pass is played will run in to defend in a 1v1 duel.

Scoring System:

Attacker gets 2 points from successfully dribbling the ball through either side gate.

Defender gets 1 point for winning the ball and dribbling through a side gate or over attacker's starting line.

Progression:

Swap roles of attacker/defender regularly, can they also start from different angles/positions as they enter the grid?

Evaluation:

Pre-action: Can you move towards the ball? Can you keep your head up to see your opponent?

Action: Are you able to control the ball into the space away from the defender?

Post Action: Can you push the ball in direction of next movement?

Key Coaching Words:

Available - Encourage moving towards the ball.

Scan - Encourage players to keep their head up with vision on opponent.

Away - Encourage players to control the ball away from the chasing defender's reach.

Action: Can you win the ball when a heavy touch is taken?

Post-Action: Can you counter-attack with speed?

Key Coaching Words:

Application: Mini Games (20 mins)

Session Organization:

Equipment as mentioned previously.

Grid Size: Create a 15m x 20m grid with goals on each end (as a guide).

Explanation:

Split participants into two equal teams and position them behind each side gate as shown. Each team has a GK who protects their goal.

GK starts game by passing to their team mate on left side gate as shown and player aims to score past opposition GK.

As first pass is travelling, the defender enters from opposite side gate to apply pressure on the attacker.

If the defender wins the ball, they can then attack the opposite goal to score.

Next ball is played by other GK after each attempt, repeat the sequence.

GK may be used to support the attacker to create a 2v1 overload.

Scoring System:

1 point for a goal and 1 point to every GK for a save made.

2 points for a goal scored after taking first touch forward.

3 points for a defender to win the ball and score in opposite goal.

Progression:

Can move to a 2v1 or 2v2 duel, attackers/defenders starting from different angles.

Evaluation:

Same Key Coaching Points from Skill Interventions earlier for receiving & pressuring.
