Passing Diamond

Main objectives:

Playing out from the back

Incorporating the goalkeeper into outfield sessions

Allowing the goalkeeper to feel comfortable with the ball at their feet

Playing the ball out from the back opposed and creating space to receive a pass

Allowing goalkeeper to play longer balls

Varied distibution (dependant on age and ability)

Set-up:

Set up the pitch to make it relevant to age and ability

Have 1 goalkeeper in each end square (where only one goalkeeper is available place an outfield player in as a receiver and rotate frequently)

To begin with, the goalkeeper plays the ball into the first section to a 'defender' this player turns and finds a team mate in the next section, this player turns and finds a team mate in the next section, this player turns and plays a laterally ball to another team mate

The ball is played back methodically to the goalkeeper.

Progression 1:

Allow the goalkeeper to vary their distribution (from the ground, throw or kick out of hands on volley/half volley) into their desired section. Monitor accuracy and technique.

Monitor outfield players ability to control balls of different heights and trajectories.

The ball is then played methodically back to the goalkeeper.

Progression 2:

Divide the groups up so that there are 2 (blue) and 1 (red) in the section closest to the goalkeepers

3 (blue) and 1 (red) in the next section

4 (blue) and 2 (red)

2 (blue) and 1 (red)

1 (blue) and 2 (red) in the final section

Essentially a 2:1 ratio of opposing players in each section.

Begin with the goalkeeper attempting to play the ball into the first section and work methodically through to the opposing goalkeeper.

Progress to the goalkeeper varying distribution to pick out a player in a better position in a different section. Allow players in each section to touch the ball (maximum of 2 touches each) before it is played into the next section.

Passing Corridor

Main objectives:

Controlling the ball in tight areas

Playing out from the back

Playing with light opposition

Playing witgh heavy opposition

Close control

Accurate passing

Varied passing (long/short)

Goalkeeper distribution (from floor, out of hands volley/half volley, throw depending on age/experience)

Control of balls of different heights and trajectories.

Set-up:

Create a corridor, approximately 10m wide and length dependant on age, experience and number of participants.

(For purpose of the diagram goalkeepers are neutral, however, if the ball starts with the goalkeeper then Green/Red and Yellow/Blue are team mates)

Team retains possession by successfully passing the ball to a team mate.

If the ball is intercepted and goes out of play, the defending team obtains the ball.

The ball can also be intercepted and played immediately by defending team by controlling an interception.

Maximum of 2 touches per player.

A point can be scored by getting the ball to either end zone without leaving your section or interception.

Progression:

Place one of each team in the opposing teams section and play the game with direct opposition.

Encourage players to pass/move/create angles.

Allow goalkeeper and outfield players to play to any section using a range of distribution/passing.

This encourages close control, accurate passing and control of balls played at different heights and trajectories.

Initiating quick counter attacks

Session objectives:

Initiating quick counter attacks

Goalkeeping distibution

Full-back overlaps

Wingers getting in crosses

support play

Goalkeepers dealing with crosses

Communication between goalkeeper/defenders

Defending quick counter attacks

Set-up:

Goalkeeper starts with ball in hand and distibutes the ball to either left back or left midfielder using varied distribution (thrown, volley, half volley) encourage the goalkeeper to get the ball out accurately and quickly (i.e. low trajectory/direct)

Good first touch out of feet from receiving player to ensure a good flow

encourage overlaps from full backs

3 players sprint up in support from halfway line

1 of the wide players plays ball into box for supporting players to attack

Defending full-back must attempt to cut out the cross

Centre halves must attempt to defend cross

Goalkeeper must communicate whether they are coming to claim the ball or whether the defenders should deal with it

Once you have completed one side with some success, switch to work the opposite side

5v3 attacking overload

Playing out from the back

Session Objectives:

Playing out from the back

Player movement to create space to receive the pass

Goalkeeper distribution

Team Communication

Set-up:

For the purpose of the diagram I have set up 4-4-2, however, this drill can be adapted to whatever formation your team plays

Goalkeeper starts with ball in hand (for thrown, volley, half volley distribution) or on the floor as if taking a goal kick.

Teammates (blues) create space to receive the pass

The ball must be worked from player to player to create an opportunity to pass or pass directly through one of three goals on the halfway line. To gain a point/goal, the ball must be controlled by one of the two attacking players in the middle or by the wide players.

Don't restrict player movements/passing, however, encourage correct techniqques

Allow the session to flow and slowly incorporate different movement patterns/ technical side taking into regard age/experience of players

Begin with light opposition (no tackling) then progress into full paced session

Movement patterns in diagram are for suggestion only.
