Description

The focus of this session is to develop a players technical ability when attacking 1v1.

COACHING POINTS & OUTCOMES

  • We want players to practice their ability to use feints (i.e dropping shoulder one way, and going the other with outside of the opposite foot), quick changes of direction, and utilising changes in their speed.
  • We want them to practice using these to draw a defender one way, before going the other way.
  • We want them to recognise that by drawing the defender, they create space in other areas for them to attack.

LCFC Principles of Play

  • Conquering space by dribbling - winning space on the pitch by dribbling through it at the highest speed possible.
  • Changing rhythm and tempo of movement - accelerating or decelerating in order to properly execute feints.
  • Creating player surplus 1v1 -  dribbling past an opposing player by either using feints or at high speed.
  • Pulling the defender out of position - when dribbling, the first thing that happens is pulling the opposition out of position, which creates space in behind them.

Ball Mastery (5 mins)

"Ball Mastery"

Set Up

  • 15m by 15m square
  • 1 ball per players

Objective

  • Players with a ball each dribbling around the area.
  • Coach to give them tasks to complete whilst dribbling; using varying areas of the foot.
These include:
  • Dribbling with the laces.
  • Dribbling and changing directions with the outside of the foot.
  • Dribbling and changing directions with the inside of the foot.
  • Dribbling with the sole of the foot (sideways rolling) *make sure player is using 'back foot'*
  • Changing directions by pulling the ball back with the sole of foot (L shape)
  • Changing directions by flicking the ball behind the standing leg with the inside of the foot.
  • Feints by dropping shoulder one way and taking the ball in the opposite direction.

Introduction - Octopus (10 mins)

Octopus

Set Up

  • Area set up about 20m x 15m (area can be increased or decreased dependant on how many players there are).
  • All players line up at one end with a ball; with a defender in the middle. (Number of defenders can be increased depending on the number of players)

Objective

  • Once the defender calls "Octopus", the objective is then for the players to dribble with the ball from point A to point B without losing possession of the ball. The objective for the defender is to tackle a player and get their ball out of the area.
  • If they are tackled by the defender and lose the ball out of the area then they become 'seaweed' and are fixed to the spot they lost the ball.
  • If the player makes it to the end they go to the next round, which on the defenders call they travel from point B to point A
  • The 'seaweed' is now an obstacle for the players in possession and can tackle any players that come into reach.
  • This continues until the last player remains who is the winner.
  • Rotate the starting defender each round.

THIS IS A WARMUP GAME - NO COACHING POINTS REQUIRED

Skill Practice (15 mins)

Complete the first few rounds without balls - this will give the players a feel for movement patterns and the speed and distances they need to feint and change directions quickly.

1v1 Through Gates

Set Up

  • Area set up about 15m x 10m
  • Three gates of poles or tall cones; set up width ways across the area 3m apart.
  • Players split up into two groups and line up behind cone at opposite ends of the area.

Objective

  • Practice starts with one player from each end stepping into the area.
  • The white team plays a pass into the player on the opposite side and then becomes the defender.
  • Once the pass is made they are required to block the gates.

  • The player that receives the ball has to try and get through to the white teams half by dribbling through one of the gates.
  • They cannot go through a gate that is being blocked otherwise they can get tackled.
  • The player should be aiming to disguise which gate they are going through; using feints and changes of direction to draw the defender to a gate before going through another one.

  • If a player successfully gets through the gates, their team receives a point.

  • Rotate the team passing the ball in so all players have adequate time attacking and defending.

IF PLAYERS ARE STRUGGLING TO PASS THE BALL IN THE I SUGGEST COACH DO THAT

Finishing Game (20 mins)

  • 2v2 tournament.
  • Pitches set up about 15m long by 10m wide.
  • If a team wins, they move up a pitch and if they lose they move down a pitch.
  • Run games for 3 minutes.
  • Try to keep games at 2v2 to encourage lots of 1v1s.
  • If odd numbers, one team can have a sub they rotate each game - they must rotate fairly.
  • If odd number of teams, then the team that wins on pitch 1 (the highest pitch) gets a rest.
