Session working on:
Delay
Deny
Deflect
Defend (tackle)
Defending as a team requires us to know when to do the following:
1. Press
2. Protect
3. Prevent (the switch of play)
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Setup:
Play a 6 vs 4. Have the back 4 setup now inside the middle area, now playing opposed, with the players on the outer areas, on either end, looking to play through the gaps to get a point, and the defenders trying to block, screen and scan the area around them, looking to cut off passing lanes and knowing and when and where to shift and move as a team.
Instructions:
The defense is trying to move with the play, step up into a pressing position and have the other players around the presser covering in behind, whilst also preventing the switch of play. Defenders have to prevent the switch by continuous work and movement as a unit.
Progressions:
You can allow at least players to now step into the possession areas
A defender is now allowed to drop into the opposite end zone, preventing the through ball
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Setup:
Play a 5 vs 5, defense vs attack.
Instructions:
Keep things simple here for both teams, coach should mainly focus on the defending side:
1. Defense can score in the mini goals when they win the ball back
2. Use the red dotted line in the middle as a reference point for the defense to play to and certain players should not cross over, as to keep their shape
3. Coach supplies the balls, and we play for 90 seconds to 2 mins maximum
4. Defense should be looking at:
Scanning/shifting and making use of the 4 D's of defense - delay the attackers, deny them space, deflect a shot if taken + potentially defend with a tackle.
Block + screening provided by the central defensive midfielder.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Setup:
Play a 5 vs 5 to finish the session, make sure coaches emphasize the importance of what are the core principles of defending such as:
Press
Protect the space behind and around the closest defender to the player in possession
Prevent the switch of play
Remember when recovering into a defensive shape can we: delay the attacker, deny them space, deflect their potential shot or defend with a tackle.

Setup:
We have the players positioned opposite each other, with different colored cones in front of each set of players. For the purpose of the visual, we are going to use a back 4 as an example in this session, but we can also just easily work this shape, setup and the basic principles for a younger 9 vs 9 team, who may play a back 3.
Instructions:
On the coaches call, whichever color (here shown as blue, red, orange + yellow), the players positioned have to react and move toward that color called, and work together as a group, pressing, protecting and preventing the switch of the play - for now the play is unopposed. This helps the players build movement and rhythm together. Whichever team gets set up first together as a unit gets the point from the coach.
