???? Purpose:
Train players to identify pressing triggers, react immediately upon entry into a central danger zone, and collapse as a unit to recover the ball quickly.
???? Setup:
Space: 20x20 yd square grid
Keyhole (Trigger Zone): 3 cones arranged in a triangle (3–5 yds apart) in the center of the square
Players:
6–8 attackers on the outside of the square (can rotate in pairs)
3 defenders inside the grid
1 ball in play
???? How It Works:
Attackers pass the ball around the perimeter of the square.
The goal is to play a pass through the triangle in the center (“the keyhole”) to another outside attacker.
Once the ball travels through the triangle, it triggers a live phase:
The three defenders are now allowed to aggressively press the ball and try to win it.
Attackers must either complete 3 quick passes or play out of pressure to reset the game.
If defenders win the ball after a keyhole pass, they earn 1 point.
If attackers keep the ball for 3+ passes after it travels through the triangle, they earn 1 point.
???? Coaching Points:
⚫️ For Defenders:
Pressing as a coordinated unit once the trigger is activated
Immediate reaction to the keyhole pass
Angle of approach to force play wide or into traps
Communication: “NOW!” or visual cue when ball hits the triangle
⚪️ For Attackers:
Body shape to open hips and receive on the move
Timing of keyhole pass — don’t force it
Quick combination play and awareness of defenders' positioning
???? Progressions:
Limit touches for attackers (2 or 1 touch)
Allow attackers to move into the grid after a keyhole pass to support combinations
Defenders rotate out after successful wins
Add a time constraint (e.g., must pass through the triangle within 10 seconds)
???? Why This Drill Rocks:
Builds team pressing chemistry
Encourages game-realistic decision-making under pressure
Teaches players to recognize cues and collapse space effectively
