Key Aims of the Session
Improve anticipation and reading of the passer’s cues to step in and intercept.
Reinforce compact team shape to limit passing options and force mistakes.
Develop quick reactions and transitions after winning the ball through an interception.
Build understanding of individual and unit roles in pressing and support positioning.

Game 1 – Possession Game with Defensive Transition Focus
Game Model Moment: Defensive Organisation
Phase of Play: Defensive Phase
Principle: Defending the Ball
Sub-Principle: Intercepting Passes & Immediate Pressure on Loss
Organisation:
Set up a pitch divided into two equal halves.
Two teams of 6 (Red vs Blue).
Reds start with possession in one half – 2 Blue defenders enter their half to press and attempt to win the ball.
If Blue wins the ball, they must transfer it to their own half and support the attack.
2 Reds then recover into the Blue half to try and win the ball back.
Rules:
Possession team must aim to retain the ball under pressure and create angles.
Defending team focuses on intercepting or winning the ball cleanly and transitioning.
If ball goes out or a goal is scored, restart with coach.
Coach manages rotation if numbers exceed 12 players.
Scoring System:
+1 point for attacking team for every 10 consecutive passes completed in a half.
+2 points for defending team for each successful intercepted pass that is transitioned to their own half and maintained for 5+ seconds.
Learning Objectives:
Improve defensive players’ ability to intercept passes during pressing phases.
Develop understanding of defensive transition and pressing triggers.
Work on quick recovery runs and defensive shape after losing possession.
Key Coaching Points:
Identify pressing triggers (loose passes, back to goal, poor body shape).
Angle and timing of approach to force poor decisions or interceptions.
Read and anticipate likely next pass.
Stay compact while pressing – don’t open central channels.
React quickly on loss – immediate pressure or recovery into compact block.
Progressions:
Add a neutral player in each half to give numerical advantage in possession.
Introduce time limit for transfer after winning possession.
Restrict touches for possession players to increase tempo and defensive opportunities.
Duration: 4 x 4 minutes (16 minutes total)
Rest: 1-minute between sets for coaching intervention

Intervention Drill – Intercepting in Channel Pressing
Game Model Moment: Defensive Organisation
Phase of Play: Defensive Phase
Principle: Defending the Ball
Sub-Principle: Intercepting Passes
Organisation:
Area divided into 4 vertical channels.
4 attackers with one in each channel, tasked with transferring the ball across channels.
3 defenders, one in each of the central three channels – not allowed to leave their assigned channel.
Ball must be transferred laterally or diagonally between channels.
Defenders may only regain possession by intercepting a pass.
Switch players in middle channels between sets.
Rules:
Attackers may pass across any channel, but cannot pass through a defender’s channel without risk.
Defenders may not step into other zones – focus is on reading, anticipating, and intercepting.
Rotate players after a set time or set number of interceptions.
Learning Objectives:
Nearest defender to the ball applies pressure using a curved run to guide play into compact areas.
Second defender maintains correct spacing and depth to cut out central passing lanes.
Third defender balances and ensures compactness across the unit – shifting in unison.
Defensive unit avoids linear shape and aims to create layered lines of pressure to increase interception opportunities.
Key Coaching Points:
Read the passer’s body shape and anticipate direction of pass.
Curve pressing runs to dictate direction and show wide or into pressure.
Stay active and alert off the ball – ready to step in with intent.
Communicate to maintain defensive balance across all channels.
Work as a unit – every movement influences the success of the press and potential interception.
Progressions:
Allow attackers to use movement off the ball to switch positions within channels.
Introduce a central neutral player who can be used to bounce passes.
Allow defenders to press forward only after intercepting a pass once.
Duration: 4 x 3-minute sets (12 minutes total)
Rest: 60 seconds between sets

Game 2 – Intercepting in Transition & Compact Shape
Game Model Moment: Defensive Organisation
Phase of Play: Defensive Phase
Principle: Defending the Ball
Sub-Principle: Intercepting Passes
Organisation:
Grid size: 36m (length) x 24m (width)
One mini goal placed 5 yards behind each end line.
Ball starts behind the goal line; teams restart from behind the goal.
Two teams play 6v6, but each phase begins as 5v4 in favour of the team in possession.
Structure & Rules:
Start each phase as a 5v4 in one half of the field (attacking team with numerical advantage).
Attacking team must connect a pass into their striker (2v1 situation across halfway line).
Once pass is received over halfway, the game becomes live and transitions into a full 6v6 across both halves.
To score, all attacking players must be over the halfway line.
Players must shoot from inside the field – no goals scored from outside the boundary.
Offside rule is active.
Each restart begins from behind the goal after a goal or ball out of play.
Progression:
Transition to full 6v6 game from the beginning.
Maintain the condition: all players must be over halfway for goals to count.
Restarts now become kick-ins from the point where the ball exits play.
Key Coaching Points:
Defensively:
Anticipate central passes – identify cues from the passer’s body shape and passing angles.
Maintain compact distances between units to reduce space for forward passing.
Intercept with conviction – body shape open to transition immediately.
Quick recovery and reaction after loss of possession to delay opposition buildup.
Offensively:
Recognise when to play into the striker in a 2v1 – encourage timing and accuracy.
Movement off the ball to open up passing lanes – especially for the forward.
Play forward quickly once the striker is engaged.
Duration: 6 x 4-minute games (24 minutes) (3x Rules Game - 3x Open Game)
Rest: 1 minute between each set

Passing Warm-Up (10 mins)
Warm-Up Drill – Reading & Intercepting
Game Model Moment: Defensive Organisation
Phase of Play: Defensive Phase
Principle: Defending the Ball
Sub-Principle: Intercepting Passes
Organisation:
2 cones set 10 yards apart.
3 or 4 players per group.
2 players (A & B) positioned in front of each cone passing the ball back and forth (touch and play).
1 or 2 players positioned behind the cones as interceptors.
Player Roles:
Interceptors behind cones observe the pass exchange and look for the right moment to step in and win the ball.
Once the interceptor successfully wins possession, they rotate in as the new passer at that cone.
The player who was replaced goes behind the cone and becomes the interceptor.
Rotation Management:
3 players: One interceptor behind one cone. After each set, rotate the non-intercepted player to become the interceptor.
4 players: Have an interceptor behind both cones, creating continuous action and rotation.
Progression:
Begin unopposed with clear instruction for the players passing to allow the interceptor to win the ball to learn timing and movement.
Progress to opposed: Passers now try to maintain possession. Interceptors must read the cue and win cleanly. If they fail, they must reset and try again at the next cue.
Key Coaching Points:
Read the weight, angle, and body shape of the passer.
Time the movement – don’t step in too early.
Keep scanning and react to loose passes.
Angle body to protect ball on interception.
Transition quickly into new role after winning the ball.
Duration: 12 minutes
3 sets of 4 minutes per group
Rotate player roles between each set
