Specific - Breaking Lines
Welsh Way Principles - Playing through / around
Understand when and how to play through or around the opposition based on the type of pressure applied
Organisation / Area Size
36m x 44m (length of central 3rd, width of 18-yard box)
Play 7v5
Play 2 x 4 minute periods with 1 min break.
Mini goals are turned diagonally inside, so the wide players don't have angles to score, forcing them to play inside, developing the importance of central connections. This also represents the patterns of inside-to-outside, to penetrate the centre, then going out wide.
Explanation
The red team's objective in possession is to try and play through or around
the opposition players to score into the two mini-goals. The team in possession can use the far side centre to attack the underloaded side if they initially cannot play through. Once the red team scores a second ball is fired into the blue team to counter-attack and allow for transitional sub principles, such as defensive balance for the red team. Pressure by the blue team is maintained by points per pass rules for the red team. Once the blue team score or possession leaves the area the red team will restart with a ball into their CBs.
How
Each coach will work with the red team for 5 minutes and the other will manage the opposition.
Patterns to find the far side CB:
1. If a wall pass via CDM is available, use it.
2. FB will narrow and stagger towards the second line to open a passing lane, bypassing the blue ST and 10 defending the ball sided CB and CDM.
3. If the FB is marked tightly or staggering is impossible, the far side 8 should drop to play a wall pass.
The blue team when out of possession are not coached but will defend with realism. The opposition in possession will use transitional sub principles but won't be coached at any time, only managed to ensure realism. They will adhere to a managed countdown so the red team have the majority of time with the ball.Opposition
B1: Defend deep, narrow.
B2: Wingers press FBs out to in to deny point per 7 passes. Also, opens central passes.
Conditions, Challenges & Targets
1. Red team goals are worth 1 point.
2. Blue goals are worth 3 points. Or then can dribble out the area for 1 point. 8 second attacking transition.
Block 1: Manage blues to defend the centre circle (narrow), work with the reds on how they play through and around the blues. Using passes to move the opposition. 3 points for the red team by scoring a 1 touch goal.
Block 2: Manage the blues to get closer to the red, mark tight (this should open things up a little), you should now be able to find the spare player and work with the MF3 on how they can play through the blues. When to turn or play bounce passes to the far side CB who attacks the underloaded side or to turn and play forward. Double points for any red goal that includes the CDM in the build-up. Red's receive 1 point for 7 successive passes - to force defensive pressure.

Medium Sized Game - Breaking Lines
Welsh Way Principles - Playing through / around / over
Understand when and how to play through, around, or over the opposition based on the type of pressure applied.
Organisation / Area Size
72m x 44m (break-out end zones are tapered to the edge of D, 20 yards wide).
11-a-side goals on the edge of the 18-yard box.
Play 9v9 = 1-4-3-3 (1-4-3-1) v 1-4-2-3-1 (1-2-2-3-1).
Play 2 x 4 minute periods with 1 min break.
MSG
Block 3: 4 minutes - Blues to defend the reds in a mid-block using central zone as a guide.
Block 4: 4 minutes - Blues to defend the red by pressing.
Explanation
Coach ONE team (in this case the reds) and the other team is
managed. The objective of the reds is to try and play through the block, then when later pressed know when to play over the press / play the furthest pass forward on the ground.
How
Block 1 - Opposition defends central and narrow to deny split passes. Allow CBs to carry the ball forward. Solution: ST finds pockets to create central overload to receive break line pass. Opposing CBs can't play aggressive and go with because 8s will run in behind.
Block 2 - Opposition presses high in defensive 3rd. Solution: 8s drop when CBs are pressured to receive and set to CDM. Or CBs and GK play directly to ST who holds up for support runs from 8s.
Conditions, Challenges & Targets
1. All goals for both teams are worth 1 point.
2. Both teams have 3 seconds to score once in the final 3rd.
Block 1: Manage blues to defend the center zone (narrow), the blue team can defend in their defensive zone. 8 seconds attacking transition if the ball is won in the central zone, 12 from the defensive zone.
Block 2: Manage the blues to press the reds. Blue can only play in central and attacking thirds. 3 seconds to score if they win the ball in attacking third, 8 in the central third.
