Description

Session Objective: Showing players how dynamic movement in the offensive third can help maintain possession to disorient the opponent's defensive line to then make a penetrating pass using disguised passing techniques to create scoring chances

Game Moment: In Possession

Physical Load: Maintenance (50%)

Identified Game Situation:

Current Behavior: Our wingers, CAM, and forward are static in their position when being wide with depth from the 6/8. This is resulting in 1v1 play to create a shot at goal as each player is in their positional space.

Desired Behavior (5 W's):

What: Our wingers, forward, and CAM are to be unpredictable in the offensive third with dynamic passing (disguised), and passing quickly to disorganize the opponent's backline to create scoring chances

Who: Primary - 7, 11, 10, 9; Secondary - 6/8

Where: Anywhere in the offensive third

When: When the 6/8 plays into either the 10 or out wide to the 7 or 11 to enter the offensive third

Why: We want the wingers, forward, CAM to recognize how quick decisions and passing of the ball in the final third helps disorganize the opponent's backline where we can then disguise our penetration pass to attack at goal and create scoring chances.

What If's:

* Most of the situations would be if the opponent forces play out wide as we don't want to focus on crosses into the box. The idea for this session is to play the ball back centrally if we play out wide to then disorient the opponent's central positioning in the 18 yard box where we find a penetrating pass/through ball between the defenders where our dynamic movement allows our attackers to receive and attempt/score at goal.

* 1v1 out wide

* 1v2 out wide

* 2v2 out wide

Coaching Points:

* Disguised pass to manipulate opponent

* Pass quickly, accurately and with appropriate pace:

 * Through ball or chip ball to player who runs in behind

 * Pass to unmarked player in or around the box

* Quick combination play between 2 or more players to find a teammate in a goalscoring position

* Recognize the player in the better position

Warm-Up (10 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 18 yard box - place two cones about 5 yards apart from each other and 3 yards above the 18-yard box as shown. Playing area should ultimately be 15 by 15 yard box if an 18-yard box is not lined out
  • Place red cones behind to setup two lines for the attackers. Place a red cone near the penalty spot for the defender
  • Focus team - Blue
  • Opponent team - Red

Activity Objective:

  • Winger and forward working together to score a goal against center back + GK using dynamic movement and disguised passing

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 15 seconds
  • Rest duration - 15 seconds
  • Sets - 20
  • 2v1+GK game. Focus team are two attackers working together against the opponent which is 1 defender + GK. If defender poke tackles or touches the ball or goalie saves - set is over.
  • Rules/Restricts/Constraints - All side outs are resets of play. Attackers have maximum 15 seconds to shoot at goal. First pass for focus team must be played to center line (forward) to activate the set, once received, defender engages. Defender or goalie touches the ball, set is over.
  • Rotations/Substitutions - After all defenders defended, rotate each line clockwise or after 4 sets. For example, if you have a line with 4 defenders, each defender goes and rotate the entire line afterwards.

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Winger and forward working together to make overlap runs or dynamic movement that allows either player to make a disguised pass to make the center back off balanced and shoot at goal. Disguised pass technique is to use your head to look one way while passing the other or use the other foot to pass the ball versus the intended one.
  • When - Natural stoppage - observe the first 4 sets, and on the start of the 5th set, execute a demo to show players the technique of disguised passes as well as expected player movement.
  • How - Demonstrate/Model/Guided Questions - at the planned stoppage, show the players the technique of disguised passes, and how the decisions impact how the winger and striker play with each other in respect to their movement to disorient the center back/defender.

  • Rotations/Substitutions - Rotate new players after each set on both teams.

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - When the 10 (CAM) plays wide to either winger or to the 9 directly, all other players making dynamic movement to then find a disguised pass as a penetrating pass to have a clear shot at goal
  • When - Pause to Capture a Moment - freeze moment in game play. Focus on teaching the players the disguised pass moment off the player movement as the cue. If witnessed, use the freeze moment to talk about overlapping movement between the defenders to create confusion and visual cues from the receiving player to indicate when the pass executes
  • How - Direct Feedback/Explicit Guidance - during the freeze moment, before specific on the movement and the disguised pass when the receiving player expects the ball for the cue moment. Use hand gesture to point where you want the ball where the passing player uses head gestures to look one way to pass to the space expected
