Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)
Create a playing area measuring 20m x 35m with a 5m strip across the centre, making a 15m box at each end
Split players into 3 equal teams (preferably 4v4v4 or 5v5v5) and position one team in each zone
Play begins with the coach playing a ball to one end where the team in possession begin to pass the ball
After playing a minimum of 5 passes, they must attempt to play the ball to the team at the opposite end, by passing through the defensive line in the centre zone.
If the defensive line intercepts the ball, the team losing the ball transitions to replace them and play restarts with a new ball
Coaching Points
Demonstrate to the defensive line how to shuffle as a unit to defend the side the ball is on
Explain how to close the passing lanes to stop through balls using positioning and body shape
Explain and demonstrate the effect that an attacking player driving at the defensive line can have and how to counter it by not being drawn to the ball (communication)
Mechanics
Show how the defenders body-shape can influence the player in possession to decide not to pass or to recycle the ball (Demonstrate)
Explain how the distance and position defenders are from each other can block the passing angles for attackers

Defending Passing Lanes (20 mins)
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Progression 1 : Allow defensive line to send 1 player in to the possession half to press
Progression 2 : Increase number of pressing players to 2
Regression : Decrease width of pitch to make through balls harder to play and easier to defend passing lanes
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Team in possession must complete a minimum of 5 passes before attempting to switch to the other side
Each successful switch = 1 point
Challenge possession teams to make 5 consecutive switches for defenders to perform forfeit
Challenge defensive team to make the team in possession perform more than 10 passes by closing down passing lanes
Each time possession team needs more than 10 passes = 1 point
Each time defensive team wins ball, team losing possession transitions to replace them
