In the session I aim to improve the team’s ability to stop the opposition from creating goal scoring chances from central area's around the edge of the 18 yard box

What: Last season we allowed the opposition to create goal scoring chances around the edge of our 18 yard box

Who: Our 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 and their 6,8,10,7,9,11. 

Where: Central area's in defensive third

When: An opposition player is on the ball facing forward in our defensive third 

Why: Opposition team was able to create numerous goal scoring opportunities from central areas around the box.

Passing Practice (15 mins)

Setup:

Field: 2 areas setup as shown. Use the width of the box and centre circle as reference points. 

Players: 14

Equipment: 20 balls, 7 red bibs, 7 blue bibs, 2 Pop up goals, 2 Futsal Goals

Explanation: 

1. Assistant coach plays the ball to the attacking team (blue) who then pass through for a shot on goal that must be taken in the box. Defending team is passive and looking to stay compact and in shape. Defending team can't drop into the box. 

2. Once the shot is taken, goal keeper plays the ball to the red team who look to play into the mini goal. 

3. Repeat. 

Progression: 

  • Defenders look to put greater pressure on the ball. Cannot tackle but can intercept.
  • If Defending team stop the ball, they get to swap sides and go towards goal

Positioning Game (15 mins)

Explanation:  

Similar Rules to the passing practice, except both team's can tackle, 

Team Task:

  • Defending Team: Can you deny the opposition goal scoring opportunities from central area's by making them play around or over us. 
  • Attacking Team: Can you combine to score.

COACHING POINTS

Player Tasks

#6 & #8

  • Can you screen and cut off passing lanes through to the 9, whilst also pressuring the 
  • Can you force them to make a sideways or backwards pass. 
  • If the full back has stepped out to press the 7/11, can you  

#3 & #4

  • If the 9 or 10 drop in, can you follow them to ensure their first touch is backwards. 

#2 & 5

  • As the ball travels across to the fullback, can you step out of your line and force them to play backwards. 

Back 4 

  • If a play pops out to press the 9/10, can you recover and narrow the central pass.

Game Training (25 mins)

Setup:

Field Size: Half Field

Players: 17

Equipment: 20 balls, 2 pop up goals, 1 full size goal. 8 Red bibs, 8 blue bibs

Explanation:

Ball starts with the blue team keeper, who distribute it long to either the 2,5 or 6 of the red team. 

Red team attack the Full size goal

Blue team attack the 2 Pop up goals that represent their #9/10

Scoring Method:

Blue team: 2 point per goal, 5 points if they score from the central zone. 

Red Team: 1 point for every turnover. 3 points if they can create a turnover from a central area and score. 

Team Task:

  • Defending Team: Can you deny the opposition goal scoring opportunities from central area's.
  • Attacking Team: Can you combine to score.

COACHING POINTS

  • One out to the ball
  • Can we shift them out wide
  • Make them play around or over, nothing through us.
