Tactical Linear Design Approach |
Organizational / Instructions
Home Run
Split hall into 2 sections; using cones.
Divide children into 4 groups with different bibs.
Two groups will be shooters i.e., greens and yellows. There will be a feeder who will pass balls back if they miss the net.
Shooters will have 2-3 basketballs between them if there are not enough basketballs for each one.
The other two groups will be dribblers i.e., reds and blues. They should have a basketball each!
Coach will demonstrate the set shot for everyone!
Whilst yellows and greens are shooting, reds and blues will be dribbling from the line of cones in the middle to the semi circle where shooters are practicing.
After a few minutes, Coach will say when to switch.
Coaching Points
Set Shot:
- Feet shoulder width apart.
- Knees slightly bent.
- Non shooting hand should be under the ball and shooting hand should be behind it.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
- Make it competitive: Dribblers must take it in turns to try get a 'home run' (from line of cones to the semi circle and back) before someone from the shooting circle gets a shot in. If they make a home run, they get a point for their team. Switch over after everyone from dribblers has had at least one turn.
Adaptations:
- If the space isn't big enough, split the children into 2 bigger groups but have only a select amount of basketballs between each group. Even asking the dribblers to go in pairs and switching between who dribbles and who doesn't at their turn.

Physical Adapting Practice |
Organizational / Instructions
Home Run w/ Progressions in Shooting
The children remain in same groups or can be switched.
Coach has now demonstrated a layup (or had someone who is more experienced do it) and a jump shot.
The children will now begin experimenting between different shots and dribblers will now be dribbling in between the cones to still get to semi circle.
Allow the game to grow competitive again by re-introducing the 'home run' rule and see if the shooters do better with having different shots to use.
Coaching Points
Layup
- Opposite foot to hand holding/laying up the ball is jumped off of.
- The same leg as hand holding the basketball is driven up to provide an extra lift.
- The jump has to be done up and towards the basket - visualise the action before doing it!
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
- Coach will call out the different shots in between playing 'home run' and shooters must follow the commands. This will help prevent them staying in the comfort zone of their possible favourite or easier type of shooting style.
Adaptations:
- Specifically, for the layup, add in a rounding line of cones so children have a route to follow before jumping with the ball.

Social Leadership Principles |
Organizational / Instructions
Basketball Game/Round Robin Tournament
Split children into 4 teams and bib them up with different coloured bibs.
Assign each team a number (or let them choose team names).
Coach will instruct which teams are playing.
The team who wins stays on and the unlucky team sits off. The next team comes on and tries to beat those winners and if successful they stay on and the previous winning team sits off.
Games will only be played up to 2 points to prevent children from sitting around for too long.
EXTRA POINTS FOR ENCOURAGING EACH OTHER AND DIFFERENT TEAMS!
Add in conditions:
- Players can only use a certain type of shot throughout game when shooting.
- Everyone must take a shot at shooting throughout the tournament i.e., the same person who shot in the last game can't shoot in the next until everyone has had a turn.
Coaching Points
Jump Shot:
- Hold the ball at chest height.
- Extend the legs and ankles by jumping straight up.
- Flex wrist and fingers forward; releasing ball at its highest point.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
- Play for a certain amount of time e.g. 20 seconds to 1 minute to apply more pressure.
- Play for a larger amount of points.
Adaptations:
- To avoid overcrowding if space is an issue, label each child with a number and call out those numbers to come and play for their team's point' therefore limiting the amount of players on the court.
- Teams who are not playing could be practicing their passing in circles.

Social Communication - Listening |
Organizational / Instructions
Pasta
Children will be walking/jogging around the hall.
Coach will demonstrate and then call out different pasta shapes correlating to different stretches.
Spaghetti: Stretch up on your toes with arms and fingertips towards the ceiling.
Pasta Twist: Stop walking and gently twist body from side to side.
Lasagne: Lay flat on floor and stretch yourself out as flat as possible ; Coach will finish off with this one.
Coaching Points
Stretching up (Spaghetti)
- Push up onto the balls of your feet.
- Straighten arms but don't hunch shoulders up by ears.
- Stretch and straighten every fingertip towards the ceiling.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
- Any child that is too late to get into the stretching position will sit out. That child could come stand by Coach and be the one to call out different pasta shapes and same with the next child and so on.
Adaptations:
- Have the children take turns of calling out a different shape or ask for their ideas of which food could relate to a stretch' helps to engage their minds.
Debrief:
The coach should ask open questions in which the learns can answer with what they have learned or how they felt about that day's session.

Introduction - Warm Up (10 mins)
Organizational / Instructions
Fruit Salad - Shooting Version
Have the children standing along the backline.
Label each child with a different type of basketball shot:
Set Shot
Layup
Jump Shot
When Coach calls out one of these shots, those labelled with that shot must then run to the opposite side of hall and back.
Coach could also have them do different movements to get across the hall i.e., heel flicks.
Coaching Points
Heel Flicks
- Keep back straight and head looking forward.
- Bend one knee and flick foot back to hit backside.
- Switch legs; jumping from balls of feet and not flat of foot.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
- Add in basketballs and have children dribbling up to the top and back.
- Add in forfeits for last person back.
Adaptations:
- Shorten the length of running by adding in a line of cones at halfway point or do this warm up width ways as opposed to length wise.
