Skill Training (25 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 14
  • Grid size 2 x 20m x 20m

Explanation:

  • Opposite each goal has 2 teams, with a ball for each player.
  • The aim of the game is for the attackers to attack the goal diagonally across from them, trying to beat the defender in the process.
  • The first attacker goes without opposition to start the practice.

  • The attackers can only score once inside the end zone.

  • The defender can score points by gaining possession and either dribbling into the 5x5 area or passing into that area if 1 of the players waiting has moved in to receive the ball.

  • Once the attacker has scored or had a shot they become defender, with the opposition player becoming the attacker.

Progression:

  • Increase area size
  • Create 1v2 situation

Key Coaching Points:

  • Can you press quickly to close down the opposition to deny them space to play forward
  • Can you use straight line running to the attacker, ideally deflecting them away from goal.
  • Can you remain low and mobile to defend 1v1
  • Can you apply pressure without dropping backwards

  • Can you prevent the attacker from turning if they're facing their own goal.

  • Can you slow down as you approach the attacker
