Switching Play (10 mins)

Welsh Way Principle

  • Understand when and how to switch the point of attack based on the pressure applied from the opposition.
Organisation
  • 20m wide, 30m length. 10 yellow cones, 2 red discs and 2 blue discs. 2 small mini goals. 5 Blue's and 5 Red's.
  • 3v3 inside the yellow coned area possession based game. 1 red and 1 blue are the wide players to be the receivers and the players who are going to be switching the play to the red who is in the red disc area by the mini goal to score.
  • 4 blocks of 4 minutes game, with a 1 minute rest period in between each interval.
Explanation
  • Both teams have got the same aim and objective of the session and that is can they in their 3v3 pass and move the ball and to quickly transfer the ball to their wide player on the outside , once their player on the outside receives the ball his aim is too switch the ball to the furthest player in the their coloured disc area and for them to receive the ball and score the goal in the mini goals.
  • If the opposition team wins the ball in the 3v3 grid area they can start the process of their aim and objective.
  • Wide players to maintain width - they can use a short pass or a long pass to their player in the disc area.
  • Make the pitch big
  • Decision Making on when to switch the play and also the reading on the movement on the blue player in the disc area if he is going to press the ball or the red player in the disc area.
  • Ball speed to beat the run of the blue player in the disc area.
  • The session will start with no pressure from the opposition player from the disc area , to try and encourage switch of play without pressure.
Coach
  • The coach will work with the red team who will start in possession of the ball and help to find solutions to beat the press of the blue team and create movement off the ball to help to break through the lines to try and pass the ball to the wide red player on the outside. The coach will also work and talk too the red wide player to help how to make good decision making on the timings of the switch of play with pressure of the opposition blue player in the flat disc area. Creating movement and being in line of the pass of the ball to make the transition quicker in the switch but also checking his shoulders to see what decision the blue player in the disc area is making so that he does not make the wrong decision and gives the ball away.
Challenges , Conditions and Targets
  • Every player in the yellow grid area 3v3 for each team when in possession much touch the ball before making the pass to their wide player. Unlimited touches and passes.
  • Every goal they score in the mini goal which is successful counts as 1 goal.
  • If a team manages to pass to each other in the yellow grid area and manages to pass it to the wide player that will count as 1 point , if the wide player manages to switch the play to the target player in the disc area is another point and if he scores is 1 more point which will total up to 3 points in total if completed.
  • If each team wins the possession back from the other team it counts as +1 for the defending team and -1 for the attacking team.
Progressions
  • Progressions of the session is that after 2minutes of the session with the no pressure of the player in the flat disc coloured area towards the wide players. The progression is for the players to press the wide players from the flat disc area to pressure their touch, decision making and to prevent a goal.
