Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): Mavu: Mirror Game

Mirror Game

Purposeful Play:  

• Players form two groups, each behind 1 square of cones.
• 1 player from each group each start in the middle of a square, facing each other.
• Players behind 1 square will be the “Leader”, the other square will be the “Follower”.
• The leader moves to and touches the different cones in their square in whatever order they decide while the 2nd player ‘mirrors’ their actions.
• To note: Players are facing each other like in a mirror. If the leader goes to the cone to their front & right, the follower will go to the cone to their front and left (see picture).
• Rotate the players in the squares every ~1 minute.

Purposeful Questions While They Are Playing - Ask Questions and Listen to Answers:

• Did you have more fun as the leader, or the follower in this game?
• Are there skills to being a good follower? What kinds of skills?
  • Potential Answer: Yes! Listening. Observing. Learning from the leader while still thinking for yourself.
• What other types of movements could you do?

Purposeful Play - Use Your Imagination or Our Suggestions to Create New Ways of Playing:  

• Switch the roles of the 2 groups. Leader group becomes the Follower and vice versa.
• Introduce a ball to each square to be used however the Leader chooses.
• As the coach, encourage and celebrate creative movement ideas!

• How do you become a leader?
• What kinds of leadership skills did you practice in this game?
