Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Academy Using Width Passing Pattern

Setup:

Mark out 2 wide channels with cones and choose 2 players to act as wide players (Players 3 and 4)

Coach on goal (not trying too hard) or no goalkeeper

Players (5 to 8) line up behind a cone, with one player (Player 2) at another central cone 10 meters in from the others

Method:

Player 1 passes to Player 2 and runs towards Player 2's cone to take his place

Player 2 passes out wide to either Player 3 or 4 and turns to make a run on goal

Player 3 or 4 runs with the ball and crosses for Player 2 to finish

Player 2 goes to back of line, play continue with Players 5 - 8 following the same pattern

After a couple of goes each, change the wide players

Coaching Points:

Passing - side of the foot through the centre of the ball, look up at receiver before passing, pace and weight of pass. Play the pass in front of the wide player to run onto

Wide player drives a good cross into the path of the oncoming player, not behind him. Use laces for power in the cross

Confident, accurate shot, receive the ball then shoot early and hard

Increase the pace of the play as they get more used to it
