Session Objective:To improve defending in a basic box/defending in a zonal system.
Organisation:
Yellows in defensive box.White goalkeeper a feeds player B and whites attack. They have five attempts to score. If yellow win the ball they counteract quickly to run the ball over the half-way line.Continue until whites have completed five attempts then yellows attack and white fall back to form a defensive box.
At first encourage yellow to stay in designated area to develop compactness.then take out the area for natural progression.Flat discs could also be used initially to establish starting points.
Key Factors:
Try to maintain the three defensive lines
Cut off passing lanes
Work as a team and stay zonal, not individual
Close down quickly to force opposition back
Concentrate and communicate
work in unison

Using the skills corridor to warm up then defend (25 mins)
Organisation:
40 x 15 area
Ball for each player-bibs
A:Introduction. Players move down corridor A , dribbling ball.Players determine what to do to make this more difficult. They determine what technique used to move ball up and a different movemnt to move down corridor.Invite all players to determine movement and demonstrate their movement.Works well to motivate.Movement can be direct, traversing - whatever players determine.
B:Introduce defenders, passive then tackling.Defenders placed at two points and two players move at time.Encourage one player to use skill to beat defender and other player moves quickly with ball through space created.2nd defender moves inline of space created and tries to tackle/win ball.Coach can use same practice putting emphasis on defending or attacking techniques depending on theme of session.
Key Factors:
Dribbling technique and quality of touch and ball manipulation
Decison when to accelerate with ball
Close down in line of ball
Sideways movement and patience when defending
Working as a pair
