Description

Session is used to build confidence and understanding of team shape and playing out from the back.

Players should be encouraged to be brave and understand that mistakes will happen and it is ok. They should also be encouraged to work hard when they do not have the ball (defending or when they lose it) to win it back.

Questions- How should we receive a pass from our teammate? What part of the foot should we use to pass? What part of my body should I get open for my teammate? What is body shape and why is it important? Is it ok to play the ball back to my goalkeeper? When is it ok to play the ball wide vs in the middle? How do I know where the ball will go next?

Answers- Across our body. Inside of the foot to hit a firm pass. I should make sure my back foot is open so I can receive across my body. Body shape is how my body is positioned before, during, after I receive the ball, it is important that my hips are open so I can see majority of the field that I want to attack. Yes, my goalkeeper is usually not defended and can help me switch the ball to the other side of the  field. If the other team is marking all the wide options then it is ok to go middle (even in front of my own goal) and vise-versa. I play the majority of the game and training with my head up, looking for teammates, opponents, and space, so I can make the best decisions.

This training session will need to be repeated multiple times and will require patience before you start to see results. The first couple times running it you should spend more time on activity 1 and 2. As they get more comfortable then you spend more time on activity 2 and making it slightly more complex and activity 3 making sure that the concepts are translating to a more free play like environment. Remember it is also ok if they try to beat people 1v1, but just explain to them the parts of the field where it is best to do that vs attacking open space with the ball.

3v1 and 4v1 Rondo (30 mins)

Play 3v1 and 4v1 Rondo

Split players into groups of 4 and 5 to  make 3v1 and 4v1 rondos. Attacking players are trying to connect 5 passes for a goal. If the defender wins the ball they can dribble out of the rondo to get a point (to dribble out the player has to dribble out past a line and then get one more touch once the ball has been dribbled out before the other team does, switch with whoever lost the ball in 3v1 and whoever's line they dribble past in 4v1). Focus for the attackers; 4v1 Rondo- Receive across body, Get back foot open, Use inside of the feet to pass; 3v1 Rondo- Same as 4v1 except players now have to shift lines to give support on the ball, they will need help with moving from one line to the next quickly then opening the body up to receive with the back foot.

If this is too difficult for the attackers, have the defender defend like a crab (crab walk) for a while until the attackers get the hang of it. Give the crab a point if they touch the ball at all. As they get better, let the crab turn into a human after 5-7 passes and see how many time the attackers can turn the crab into a human.

5v3+2 Build up (30 mins)

Play 5v3+2 Build up

Play starts with one of the two neutral players in the safe zone (no defending in this zone). Attackers get a point if they can connect form neutral to neutral. (Neutrals and the two attackers farthest from the neutral you are trying to get to cannot play directly to the opposite neutral). Start by using two defenders, each defender can defend in one zone with the two attackers and the middle zone, but not all three. If it becomes too easy add a third defender, then each defender can only defend in their respective zones. You can allow attackers a little bit of freedom to move between zones as you start to add defenders, but I don't recommend ever having a +2 attacker advantage allowed in any zone. Organization of this activity can change based on your formation for game day, here  you have a 1-2-1-2-1/1-2-3-1 structure.

3v3+2 with keep (20 mins)

Play 3v3+2 with keep

Play starts with either keeper in the build out zone. (Can also make this a safe zone where there is no defending or only 1 defender allowed to encourage play the ball around the back). Players are using the ideas and techniques from earlier in the session to create 1v1 and 2v1 situations to maintain safe and controlled build up to create quality scoring chances. Players should be encouraged to receive across their body and hit firm passes to their teammates with the inside of their foot. Play for x minutes or until x goals are scored and switch out neutrals.
