Bull Rush (10 mins)

Organisation:

Coach is to outline a square or rectangle for the game to take place. Players are to line up on one side of the area in a straight line, with the coaching standing in the middle as the first Tipper.

How to Play:

The aim of the game is for the attackers (red) to run or dribble from one side of the area, to the other side of the area without getting tipped by the tippers (black and/or blue).

If an attacker gets tipped, they join the defenders in the middle as tippers.

When playing without the ball, defenders can tip attackers on the shoulder. When playing with the ball, defenders can tip attackers by placing placing their foot on top of the attacker's ball.

Coaching Tips:

Coach should always start as the tipper. This way everyone will get a good chance to achieve success without getting tipped immediately.

With younger kids, you can play a couple of games without the ball to warm them up and allow them to understand the aim of the game before introducing the ball.

Can you keep your head up to see where the defenders are

Can you keep the ball close to you so you can change direction if the defender gets close

Can you use some of the skills we learnt in the first game to get past the defender?

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

Make the space smaller to make it harder for the attackers and easier for defenders.

Make space bigger to make it easier for the attackers and harder for defenders.

Add more or less defenders to change the starting difficulty level for the attackers.

End-Zone Game (15 mins)

Organisation:

This match will be played with all the normal rules, however the goals will be replaced by end-zones as marked out by the yellow cones. The end-zone is any space between the marked out line and the goal-line at the end of the pitch.

How to Play:

The game is played as usual, however teams score by having a player dribble the ball into the end-zone.

Towards the end of the match, you can introduce the pop-up goals and player a normal match with with the end-zone becoming the shooting zone so that the game is still promoting running with the ball and preventing long shots.

Coaching Tips:

Where is the space? How can you help you work as a team to get into the end-zone?

Help players to spread out and use the wide areas. This is a good opportunity to show the benefits of the diamond formation.

Can you keep your head up and dribble as fast as you can when you have space?

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

Add a bit of difficulty where players have to place one foot on the ball (airplane) to score inside the end-zone.

Make the space bigger or smaller to make it easier or harder.

Physical Literacy Game: Breakaway (10 mins)

Organisation:

Split players into two teams where each player has a ball and will run with the ball in the centre zone.

How to Play:

Coach is to clearly define where each team is to score in.

When the coach calls out a team's colour, e.g. "BLUE!", the blue team will dribble their balls as quickly as possible into the end-zone and take a shot at goal.

The team that wasn't called leave their balls and attempt to stop players of the other team from scoring.

Repeat sequence and switch up roles.

Coaching Tips:

"Can we keep our head up while dribbling?"

"Can we try to get past the defenders by changing speed and direction?"

Coach can get involved, praising and encouraging desired actions.

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

Make scoring zone closer or further away.

To make it harder for defenders, the attacking team can score in any goal.

End Game (15 mins)

Organisation:

Roughly 30m x 20m field size.

How to Play:

Have the end game look as much like the game on the weekend as possible, this means normal game rules.

Coaching Tips:

Encourage dribbling and running with the ball, this can be done by giving the players Boosters when they dribble before scoring.

In the Discovery Phase 'structure' can be introduced by helping players understand the concept of spreading out and helping their team mates.

CHANGEIT / Progressions:

Want to see more goals? Play with 4 goals rather than 2. This can also help players spread out.
