1v1 to 2v2 Steering Game (25 mins)

Set-Up/Rules:

  • 25x15 yard grid with one goal centered on the end line and the other end line has a goal off-centered 
  • A line is marked out slightly closer to the centered goal 
  • Players split into two teams one attacks (red) and one defends (blue)
  • Defending team plays ball out to attacking team and goes to close down
  • Teams earn points by scoring on the small goals on the end line - attacker can't score until crossing the line 
  • Progress to 2v2

Intervals:

  • 2 sets of 4 x 3:00 (1:00 rest)

Coaching Points:

  • Close down quickly (get there before attacker crosses line)
  • Get opponent's head down 
  • Shape of approach to force opponent one way 
  • Body shape to force opponent one way

Pressing Diagonals Rondo (25 mins)

Set-Up/Rules

  • 40x30 yard grid
  • Each team has two target players in opposite corners as shown 
  • Team scores by playing from one corner to the other 

Intervals:

  • 5 x 3:00 (1:30 rest)

Coaching Points:

  • Angle of approach 
  • Force play towards your bumpers 
  • FIRE out as the ball is in motion
  • Compact block between ball and target

Steering Tactical Game (35 mins)

Set-Up/Rules:

  • In 1/4 of pitch set up one off centered large goal with keeper and 4 small goals as shown
  • The red team attacks the 4 small goals and the blue team attacks the large goal 
  • Standard soccer rules apply (throw-ins, set plays, etc.) but play restarts with red goalkeeper after goals or ball that goes out over the a line with a small goal on it

Intervals:

  • 3 x 6:00 (2:00 rest)

Coaching Points:

  • CF forces play wide and uses cover shadow to deny switch of play through CM
  • Winger FIRES out on pass to FB to go press (force ball into midfield)
  • CMs shift over where and prepare to win ball played into midfield 
  • Counter quickly
