Grid Passing
12 GRIDS - ONE AIM - PASS & RECEIVE
THE SETUP
The playing area is divided into twelve 2x2 yard grids, laid out in the format shown in the image
- There is one player inside each grid, making a total of 12 players
- There are 4 footballs
THE RULES
Players are required to pass the ball to another player in an adjacent grid
- Players can pass in a lateral or linear direction
- No diagonal passes are allowed
- Two players cannot pass the ball to the same player
- All passing is two-touch
Change a player’s positioning within the grid to give them a taste of all sorts of situations.
PROGRESSIONS
- Passes must always be diagonal and can go over more than one grid.
- Introduce one-touch passing and different kinds of passes (slightly raised, sharp, etc.)
- Use one football of a different colour and mark out a particular player on the grid. Every time the ball reaches that player, give a point to the players. Set a minimum target, say 10 times in 1 minute, that the player needs to receive the coloured ball
COACHING POINTS
- Good verbal and non-verbal communication
- Good body shape when receiving the pass
- Passing technique needs to be perfect
- Passing needs to be smooth
- Players cannot hang onto the ball for long
- Players need to have their heads up and be aware of the players around their square
