Wk7: Passing - Into positive/negative space
Surface: Inside
* Last week we worked on recognizing pressure on the receiving aspect - shielding the ball away from pressure, this week we will be focusing on passing into positive space (away from defenders) *

Organization:
Part 1
10 x 10 yard area set up as shown
6 players set up as shown
1 ball (Additional around the outside)
Part 2
Same dimensions
4 players (3 Attackers, 1 Defender) set up as shown
Instructions:
Part 1
1. Player A passes the ball in front of Player B then runs to the back of Player B's line
2. Player B sprints to receive the ball from Player A
3. Player B receives the ball, passes the ball to Player C then runs to the back of Player C's line
4. Player C then receives the ball, passes the ball in front of Player D, then runs to the back of Player D's line
5. Player D moves to receive the ball from Player C
6. Player D receives ball, passes to Player E (who has now at the front of the line) and runs to the back of player E's line
7. Play continues with Player E passing to Player A and so on
Part 2
1. 3 v 1 keep away within the area
2. Attacking team must keep possession within the area. Attacking team must always present 2 options to the player receiving the ball. If open ball is too slow to get into space and present themselves as an option for the receiver, the receiver must automatically play the ball back from the player he/she received from.
3. For every 10 passes the attacking team gets 1 point. Attacking team starts with a 5 point buffer
4. If the defender manages to intercept or force the player out of the area, a point is taken away
5. Attacking team must try to acquire as many points in a 2 minute period
6. After 2 minutes defender is switched over and play starts again
7. Restarts are started by the attacking team and start from 0 passes. First pass is always free
Coaching Points:
1. Angle of approach - Specific technique being coached
2. Head up to observe your target
3. Supporting foot - Specific technique
4. Contact with the ball
5. Contact with the foot
6. Body weight
Progressions / Regressions:
(P1) - Incorporate short, short, long passing pattern
(P2) - One touch only
(R1) - Slow tempo down; take a minimum of two touches

Organization:
30 x 30 circle (size depending on numbers)
3 Equal number of teams
1 team: Each player with a ball
Instructions:
1. As in diagram, yellow players start with the ball first. Red players shadow the yellow. Blue players are spread out around the perimeters of the circle.
2. Yellow player passes the ball into the blue players for a point.
3. The blue player returns the ball to the yellow player. Yellow player must find a new blue player to pass to.
4. (P1) Shadow defenders are live, if red touches the ball that is a point taken away from the yellow player.
5. (P2) Blue receiving player decides to either pass or dribble the ball, depending on red pressure.
Coaching Points:
1. Body Shape - Side body shape; Using arms to feel the defender; Low center of gravity (knees bent; expand body area)
2. Approach - Creating space: movement away from the ball; Checking in: movement towards the ball; Awareness: Can we take the ball on our front/back foot depending on pressure; Ball furthest from defender, body in between.
3. Surface technique - Sole of the foot, using the foot furthest from the opposing player; Rolling with the inside or outside of the foot based on pressure.
4. Awareness - Timing and quality of pass; Timing of movement away/toward ball; Creating space; Decision making once full pressure is added (front or back foot)
5. Execution of move - Ability to hold off opposing player; Placing the ball on the furthest foot from the defender; Finding space to turn or recognizing when to use support.
Progressions:
(P1) - Shadow players, defenders, are live.
(P2) - Blue receiving player decides to either pass or dribble the ball, depending on red pressure.

Warm-up: Rondo
Organization:
10 x 10 or 15 x 15 depending on numbers
Player 1 (defender) : 2 (attackers) ratio
Max amount of player in a grid = 5 attackers
Instructions:
1. Possession game where there is 1 defender every 2 players. Defender tries to steal the ball. "Attackers" try to possess. (Much like keep away)
2. Defender tries to touch the ball. If he/she does they switch with the player who lost possession.
3. If the ball goes out the defender stays the same (defenders must touch or steal the ball away to become an attacker)
4. Progress to Rondo transfer box (P3)
Coaching Points:
1. Communication
2. Awareness of space/pressure etc.
3. Try to play to back foot and turn to switch ball in other direction when receive it if possible
4. Quality/weight of passes.
5. Angles/distances of support
6. Constantly re-evaluate your position (can I be in a better position?)
Progressions:
(P1) - 5 passes equals a life against the current defender. Must stay in for a second round after touching the ball
(P2) - A nutmeg or a through ball (if there are two defenders) counts away a life against the defenders.
(P3) - Rondo transfer: two grids are combined and the teams work against each other
