Drill

Organisation/Conditions

Full width half sized pitch. Wide areas are sectioned off to focus on these players.

12 players and GK

Whites defending in a 132 (1442) and red attacking in a 241 (442)

Red 6 starts the drill by passing to Red 3.

Whites cannot go into wide areas until ball is passed in (realistic starting positions - compact defensive shape). Red 9 must stay high and Red 6 must stay in circle.

Targets/Challenges

Reds are trying to score using wide areas and Whites must defend this effectively. Two points are awarded to whites for defending successfully and goal as normal for Reds.If whites regain possession they aim to pass the ball as quickly as possible to the Red feeder.

Let play for 2 mins and coach what I see.

Key Points

White 7 must close down Red 3 and show him back inside shutting off the pass to Red 11. He moves by arching his run when he sees Red 6 pass.If Red 10 is placed where he is he can also screen that off but his main aim is defending wide area.

Ball goes back to Red 6 or Red 6 dummies and plays in Red 2 straight away, Red 11 must react quickly and show Red 2 back inside again.

If Red 3 passes into 10 or 11 (or even straight to 10 from 6) then Red 7 must track 3 to stop overload out wide.

Eventually ball will get to Red 7 or Red 11. Whites 11 and 7 MUST track runners. Whites 2 and 3 must show wingers down line and aim to block cross or force play backwards.

Look at starting positions and coach 'away from the ball'. White 11 and 3 must have compact and narrow shape but body open to see what's happening on their side of pitch and be ready to shuffle. This is mirrored if ball is on the other side and Whites 2 and 7 shuffle across.

Also if cross does get played in from Red 3/11 coach positioning of White defenders.

GK's positioning-always in line with ball.

SSG

Organisation/Conditions

9v9 inc GKs

Whites 1431, Reds 1341

2/3 pitch and wide channels on wings. Defenders only allowed in when ball is played in (as drill)

White striker to stay high to offer depth

Progression - get rid of channels

Targets/Challenges

Reds get double points if score from wide area and 1 point for normal goal.

Whites get a point every two minutes if they are keeping clean sheet and 1 point for normal goal.

Key Points

Same as drill.

Reds have overload in middle therefore whites must be aware of defence splitting balls. Therefore must communicate, keep narrow, track runners etc.
