Having dominated possesion in the previous match and worked the ball into the wide areas we failed to capitalise and the quality of our final ball or finishing from these positions could have been better.
The focus of the session will be on working the ball into the wide areas to cross and finish

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Conditioned Game Set Up:
- 9 v 9, with goalkeepers now added
- Area set up as above with the middle zone extended and the pitch widened by 5m each side
- Both Teams still only play in the central area
- At any time, the attacking team can pass the ball into one of the wide areas in the End Zone. Any attacker can enter this zone and can be defended. However, players cannot receive the ball before the End Zone and take it into the area. They must receive inside the zone.
- Once an attacking player has received the ball, they have a maximum of two touches where they can pass/cross the ball into the box (ideally done in 1 touch to encourage speed). The attacker then must finish in 1 touch in the goal past the Goalkeeper. A maximum of 3 attackers and 3 defenders can enter the middle zone to defend/attack respectively.
Emphasis remains on the previous Key Points:
- Combination Play and Passing Variety
- Timing of Runs
- Attackers Movement

Small Sided Game (30 mins)
Playing into Wide Areas to Cross - Small Sided Game Set Up:
- 10 players
- Area as per the image 60 x 30 with 2 'End Zones' with 3 areas, two wide zones and a box.
- Two teams (Blue vs Red) play a small-sided 6v6 game with 2 Magic Men (wingers and full backs) who play for both teams. Both teams must only play in the central area. The end zones act as offside lines.
- At any time, the attacking team can pass the ball into one of the wide areas in the End Zone. Only a Magic Man can enter this zone and cannot be defended. The Magic Man cannot receive the ball before the End Zone and take it into the area. They must receive inside the zone.
- Once the Magic Man has received the ball they have a maximum of two touches where they can pass/cross the ball into the box (ideally done in 1 touch to encourage speed). An attacker must then attack the end zone for a 1 touch finish in the mini goal. Defenders can't go into the End Zone to start. with, progress to defenders tracking
Key Points:
Combination Play & Passing Variety - Players should use a variety of passes and identify when to play longer passes (such as switch passes, both lofted and driven) to play in behind on the opposite side, or combination play, depending on the situation the face.
Timing of Runs - Working primarily with the Magic Man, players should identify when to make the run to arrive beyond the defensive line. The trigger is when a team member is on the ball and free to turn towards goal and have time to pass. Magic Man should ideally make a run from a deep position to receive the ball in the wide areas. Alternatively, when combination play is progressing, can players time their run to receive at the right time.
Attackers Movement - Attackers need to identify when and how to make a run into the box. Attackers should start to make their run as the pass is being played into wide areas to the Full Backs, whilst looking to anticipate passes into the central area and use creative movement to lose a defender to score (when added)
