Description

Session Design: 6v6

  • Duration: 3x5 minute blocks

  • Conditions:

    • Defenders: Cannot pass the cones during the first two blocks.

    • Blues: Have 10 seconds to score in the mini goals.

    • Red CB: Not allowed outside the centre circle

In-Possession Coaching Points for the Session:

Quick Passing and Movement:

  • Encourage Blues to move the ball quickly, creating gaps in the Red defense. Make sure to involve the full-backs and wingers in combination play.

  • Creating Overloads:

    • Focus on Blues working in pairs or small groups (2 or 3) to outnumber Red defenders in wide areas. This can be achieved through quick rotations or overlapping runs.

  • Wingers Rolling Inside:

    • Wingers should look to cut inside once they've isolated the defender, or when the center forward drops in to create space. This opens up the central channel for runners.

  • When the 9 Drops In:

    • The 9 (centre forward) should drop into midfield when the ball is played out to create a numerical advantage and open space for the wingers to push forward.

  • Passing and Crossing Options:

    • Encourage varied crossing techniques—early crosses, cutbacks, or low-driven balls, depending on the situation. The wingers should look to get to the by-line or cut inside for a shot.

    • Timing of Runs:

      • The attacking players need to make runs at the right time to break the defensive lines—using overlaps, underlaps, or diagonal runs to unbalance the defense.

    • Passing Variations:

      • Blues should use a variety of passes—short, long, and through balls—to break down the defensive block. Focus on the timing and weight of passes to ensure the ball gets to the intended target.

    • Creating Space Through Movement:

      • When the 9 drops into the pocket of space, the wingers should look to stretch the defense by making diagonal runs into the box, allowing space for a final pass or cross.

    • Types of Crosses:

      • Blues should vary the types of crosses they make into the box. Depending on the position, they should decide whether to play early, cutback, or chipped crosses into the box, aiming for the 9 or any late-arriving players.

      • High Pressing:

        • Blues need to press the Reds high up the pitch. Work as a unit to win the ball quickly and transition into attack. Once possession is regained, they should look to break quickly and exploit any space left by Red defenders.

      • Exploiting Space After Pressing:

        • Blues must transition rapidly to create overloads in attacking areas after winning the ball back. Use quick, direct passes to exploit spaces behind Red’s defensive lines.

      • When the 9 Drops In:

        • The 9’s movement dropping deeper can drag the defenders out of position, creating more space for attackers to exploit. This opens up the chance for the Blues to work short combinations or long passes into space.

      • Creating Overloads in Transition:

        • In the transition phase, make sure Blues create numerical advantages by getting players forward quickly. The Blues should look for options to play through or wide, exploiting any gaps in the defence.

Block 1: Creating Overloads & Wide Play

Objective: Focus on creating overloads in wide areas and practicing winger movement.

    • Organisation:

      • Blues focus on maintaining width and creating numerical advantages in wide areas.

      • Red: Defenders are restricted to their zones (cones), ensuring the Blues must find ways to stretch the defence.

    • Coaching Points:

      • How to create overloads: Encourage Blues to work in pairs or groups of 3 to outnumber defenders in wide zones.

      • When do the wingers roll inside: Wingers should look to roll inside once they have isolated the full-back, or when there’s space for a central runner.

      • When does the 9 drop in: The 9 should drop in when the ball is played into midfield, creating more space for the wingers to push forward.

      • Target: Focus on quick ball movement, with emphasis on finding space to create overloads.

Block 2: Timing Runs and Passing Options

Objective: Focus on timing the runs and the types of passes to break defensive lines.

    • Organisation:

      • Blues will attack using quick passes and runs to break the defensive lines.

      • Red CB: Restricted to the centre circle, ensuring the Blues’ movement and quick passes are key.

    • Coaching Points:

      • Types of shots, passes, runs, and crosses: Encourage Blues to use different passing types (short, long, through balls) and incorporate timing of the runs (overlaps, underlaps).

      • Types of crosses: Teach Blues to vary their crosses—early crosses, cutbacks, or chipped balls depending on the situation.

      • When the 9 drops in: If the 9 drops into the pocket of space, the winger should look to stretch wide or make a direct run in behind.

      • Target: Quick decision-making for effective, dynamic attacking play.

Block 3: Compact Defending & Transition Play

Objective: Focus on defensive structure and quick transitions to exploit counter-attacks.

    • Organisation:

      • Blues will press and defend high, trying to win the ball quickly and transition into attack.

      • Red: Restrict their movement to the centre circle and must play out under pressure.

    • Coaching Points:

      • How to create overloads: Blues should press in numbers to win the ball and create a counter-attacking overload.

      • When the 9 drops in: The 9’s dropping will pull defenders out of position, giving Blues’ attackers the chance to exploit space.

      • Target: Blues need to transition quickly and exploit space left by defenders as they press.

Block 4: Final Play and Team Cohesion

Objective: Focus on fine-tuning team play and fluid attacking movements.

    • Organisation:

      • Blues will now have full freedom to attack while the Reds defend in a more organized way.

    • Coaching Points:

        • Organisation:

          • Blues will now have full freedom to attack while the Reds defend in a more organised way.
