2. Through underlaps
3. Third Man run via combination with #9 and/or #10.
Session Process
- Warm Up before Passing Practice.
- Passing Practice
- Positioning Game - SSG 6v6 +2 jokers in wide areas. Wingers used as neutrals to get specific practices.
- Game Training - 7v7
- Training Game - 11v11

15 mins
Passing Practice:
- Patterns of play in an unopposed set-up as shown above.
Repetition key here, just let the players get touches on the ball and gain a general idea of what the session will be working and focusing on.
Process:
- Passive defensive players set as shown above. CB and 2 FBs.
- 3v1 Rondo to start, rotate players in different roles regularly and encourage dynamic stretches between stations where possible as part of activation warm-up phase.
- Once the BP team (blue) have secured three passes in the rondo they look to play into one of the wide players and perform and then replace that player for the next wave of attack. The defenders work for 90 seconds, then rotate, defending passively only at this stage. Develop the following patterns of play, making sure not to coach actively at this stage.
- Ball to be crossed for #9 and #10 (one from each queue) attack the ball to finish.
- Work alternative sides, dynamic stretches again and observation of opposite side for behaviour influencing.
- If the BPO team wins the ball they look to clear their lines towards the halfway line to reset the drill.
1. Offer an overlap option around the outside of the winger as they are 1v1 against the BPO full back, creating a 2v1.
2. Underlapping run of the winger, option inside to encourage winger to go outside the full back.
3. Combination Play with the #9 and #10 for third man run
4. Free Play to finish, see what the players come up with.
Rotations:
Overlapping player (2) replaces (1) after cross. Player (1) goes to the back. Player (3) replaces (2) and Player (4) replaces (3).
- The red defenders are fixed until the wide player touches the ball.

Positioning Game:
50x40 grid to allow for good use of width here. The Positioning Game (SSG) setup will be 6v6 +2 for the BP team at anytime. A general formation of 2-1-1-1 to be used to emphasise the benefit of playing wide and looking to overload those spaces in the attacking areas of the pitch. Look for repetition again but with some elements of game realism as well. Active defending and a target of first to score 10 points will add this for the players.
Scoring a goal without using one of the wide channels scores 1 point, 2 points for any goal that comes directly or indirectly from a wide attack where an overload was attempted.
Objectives:
- Look to develop ideas of how to create and effectively use 2v1s in wide areas. MOBILITY, SUPPORT, PENETRATION, ADAPTABILITY, IMPROVISATION all relevant here and can be actively coached as and when opportunities arise in open play.
Consider coaching on the go for wide players particularly here as positioning wise as a coach it would be a good option to encourage timing and options of movement while play is progressing.
- Decision making ratio improvement to create more goal scoring opportunities.
Process
- Pitch divided into 3 zones - 16 players inclusive of goalkeepers and two jokers.
- Players organised into attacking shape and including the neutral
- Need 3 teams
- Neutrals remain within the wide areas at all times
- Play starts with the GK and teams look to score
- In possession you can have a maximum of 1 defender in the wide area
Team Tasks:
- How can the attacking team utilise the overload?
1. Over/Under lap within the wide area.
2. an the BP team combine using a support player to get a runner beyond (third man run).
Player tasks:
#7 and #11 in joker roles, can you offer viable options at all times to allow for the direction of play changes and to also drag a defender out of their defensive shape. Don't get tempted to step inside too far, keep shape for the benefit of the team.
#3 and #4 can you look to offer depth to play around what will likely be a 3v1 or at worst 3v2 situation (including using the GK) when in possession.
#10 or #9 can you look for moments when you can offer a wall pass or third man run option when the #6 or #8 plays wide as well as also offering an option if played centrally to build the play with back to goal to allow #8 or #10 to effectively work together to combine the move.
Blocks
- 6 x 4 min blocks or less if required, dependant on quality and fatigue levels. Offer drinks breaks when rotating or adding in new rules.
Scoring
- 1 for a normal goal.
- 2 for a cross which comes from an overlap /underlap goal.
- First to 10 points wins.
Progression
- Joker wide players can drive inside the main area with the ball, not without it. How does impact the defending team and what strategy can we now look to use?
- Consider an overload situation of 7v5 with the additional 2 jokers remaining.
Coaching points:
- When do the players create the overload in the wide areas?
- Movement of the wide player and angles they take.
- Triggers for an over /underlap - what is the player looking for (max width, facing forward inside).
- How can the players inside assist with the overload (third man runs).

Game Training:
- Game realism the key now, we want to progress from the Positioning Game and the coaching points used there to open into a more game realistic scenario with more space and no joker players this time. 7v7 with the onus of decision making of who offers wide options and when now on the players.
Process
- Played within the width of the 18 yard box with a further 5 metre channel either side if the 18 yard box.
- 2/3 of pitch length.
- Outside areas can be entered by attacking player with an initial time limit of 5 seconds to either beat and cross or come inside of the defender. Another option given this Game Training is to open the play out if no suitable option of support is provided (overlap, underlap or third man run) to look to change the direction of the play and maybe try the other side.
Team Tasks:
- How can the attacking team utilise the overload?
1. Over/Under lap within the wide area.
2. an the BP team combine using a support player to get a runner beyond (third man run).
Player tasks:
- #7 and #11 in joker roles, can you offer viable options at all times to allow for the direction of play changes and to also drag a defender out of their defensive shape. Don't get tempted to step inside too far, keep shape for the benefit of the team.
- #3 and #4 can you look to offer depth to play around what will likely be a 3v1 or at worst 3v2 situation (including using the GK) when in possession.
- #10 or #9 can you look for moments when you can offer a wall pass or third man run option when the #6 or #8 plays wide as well as also offering an option if played centrally to build the play with back to goal to allow #8 or #10 to effectively work together to combine the move.
- Introduce a 3 touch maximum in order to make players offer support quicker and position themselves more responsibly in order to be in a position to utilise overloads better in wide areas.
Coaching Outcomes Wanted:
- Winger in wide area look for underlap option.
- Winger inside then look for overlap option.
- Winger becomes aware to look for third man run or potentially offer a third man run, example above.

Training Game:
For the final 15 minutes of the session we move to an 11v11 version of the Game Training exercise, now focusing on full sized pitch and also looking to get as many wide overload opportunities as possible without losing game realism.
Progression:
Offer a temporary formation change where the BPO team now have a very narrow formation, giving one team additional spaces to target playing wide. See if the BP team with a 4-3-3 formation can utilise this BPO shape.

Session Objective:
I aim to help the team develop a better understanding of how to identify and create 2v1s or 3v2s in wide areas with the BP wingers and fullbacks against the BPO #2 or #5 with the end goal of creating goal scoring opportunities.
