25 mins
Area: Approximately 40 yards x Field Width
Phase Duration: 20 minutes. Coach stops at the 10 minute interval briefly reviewing coach points.
Players: 10 players total. 1 GK, 5 'attackers', 4 'defenders'
Equipment: Balls, 2-3 mini goals, Pennies
Scenario: Goal kick from our half.
Objective: To successfully advance the ball into the central minigoals.
Notes: On the other side of the field the same exercise is occurring so all players and second GK are participating. Session assumes the presence of an assistant coach to supervise and coach this simultaneously occurring session.
Instructions:
1) GK rolls outs to one of the center backs. Outfield players must successfully pass five times while opposed. Defenders may not enter the 18-yard box into the ball is rolled out by the GK, just like a normal goal kick.
2) If the outfield players play the ball back to the GK, the pass count restarts.
3) The attackers cannot pass the ball into the minigoal with five passes being first completed.
4) Defenders attempt to defend and win the ball back. Defenders may then take shots on goal. GK defends goal.
Competitive Format:
Each successful sequence of 5 passes equals 1 point for the attackers.
Each successful pass into the minigoal is 1 point for the attackers.
Each successful disposition is 1 point for the defenders.
Each successful goal scored from the defenders is worth 5 points.
Play continues until one team scores 10 points or 4 minutes have passed.
Rotation:
Once 10 points are scored, four attacking players will become the four defending players.
Coaching Points and Guided Questions:
1. How can we create options for our team to get the ball forward? Attack = Expand. Defend = Contract.
2. What is the fundamental way to receive the ball? Receive ball at half-turn in body position in order to advance ball towards the opponent's goal.
3. How do we know what our options are? Scan. "Eyes are our greatest tool."
4. How can I let my teammate know I can help him? Command for Ball. Use voice and gestures. Do not assume he sees you.
Progression:
1. Remove a minigoal.
2. Add a fifth defender.
3. Reduce space to the width of the 18-yard box.
Regression:
1. Remove a defender
2. Have minigoals in multiple different locations (left, middle, right)
