Developing Progressive Possession

Setup:

  • Blues: 2-3-3 attacking formation
  • Yellows: 1-4-2-1 defensive setup
  • Play starts with Yellow striker losing possession
  • Blues build attack through thirds
  • Focus on progressive possession
Activity:

  • Blues aim to progress up pitch
  • Must play forward when possible
  • Yellow counter when they win ball
  • Realistic game intensity 

Progressions:

  • Forward Count
  • Count consecutive forward passes
  • 3+ forward passes = bonus point
  • Backward pass resets count
  • "Line Break Rewards"
  • Points awarded for breaking defensive lines:
  • Breaking midfield line = 1 point
  • Breaking defensive line = 2 points
  • Creating shooting chance = 3 points
  • "Press & Adapt"
  • Coach signals specific Yellow players to press
  • Blues must adapt and exploit spaces
  • If Blues lose possession during press = extra point for Yellow's
