To help players understand and execute the key principlesand techniques of switching play:
• Technical ability and detail when passing and receiving
• Recognition of when to switch play and how to do so.
• Choice and execution of the appropriate technique orroute to switch play.
PART 1: 3v3 +2 OPPOSED PRACTICE -
• This practice allows young players to gain anunderstanding of the principles of switching play.
• It is a 3v3 in the central area of a small pitch, with twoneutral players who must be found in wide channels.
• The players will have many opportunities to practiseand execute the passing techniques required to switchplay, while also being required to make decisions inorder to develop their perception and awareness.
PART 2: END-ZONE GAME
• This 5v5 is played on a small pitch with wide channelsand end zones marked out, with goals at either end.
• The focus is on playing the ball across the three verticalchannels, to build understanding of how to switch play.
• There is also an element of timing forward runs into theend zones to create opportunities to score.
PART 3: CONDITIONED 5v5 GAME• This small-sided game takes place on a pitch measuring30 yards by 25 yards, with wide channels marked out,and goals at either end.• Normal rules apply, but a goal will count double if ateam switches play across the three vertical channelsof the pitch prior to scoring.• Because players do not have to do this switch in orderto score a goal, the practice makes decision-making andgame awareness a key part of their learning

End Zone Game-
10 players
• It takes place in a playing area measuring 30 yards by25 yards, with two end zones across the width of thepitch, and two wide zones/ lanes marked out in themain playing area.
• Players are allowed to move freely from channel tochannel, but cannot stand in their own end zone priorto the ball arriving there.
• If the ball does arrive in their own end zone, defenderscan recover into it to defend.
• For a team to score, the ball must enter all threechannels of the main playing area, before being passedinto the end zone. The runner – who will have to remainonside if this rule is applied – can shoot or pass once inthe end zone. Players cannot dribble into the end zone.
• Players are allowed to pass or dribble the ball into allthree central channels, and can begin doing so fromtheir own defensive end zone.
• If players win the ball back in the opposition end zonefrom a high press, they are allowed to score straightaway. This will provide realism and encourage positiveout-of-possession reactions.
COACHING DETAIL:
TECHNICAL TECHNIQUE OF PASS• Players can learn and practise ways to switch play. These passes may be driven, curled, clipped, whippedor punched out wide.
LONG OR SHORT SWITCHES• Players can also try to recognise how to switch theball, whether through direct, long switches, or shorterswitches of play via combinations.
BODY SHAPE TO PLAY FORWARD• Players should try to have a forward-facing body shapebefore receiving the ball, in order to pass forwards withtheir next action.

5v5 Conditioned game using the wide zones
Area size- 30 yards by 25 yards, with agoal at either end and wide zones/lanes.
• The game is a normal 5v5, but with conditions where agoal will count double if a team plays the ball in all threechannels before scoring.
This is designed to bring outsome key principles of switching play. this will build on from the previous weeks and also from what the players have learnt in the session today. we can encourage the ball to go into the wide areas but what if there is no option, 1v1, support the runners in behind etc.

3v3+2 Switching play-
This 3v3 +2 practice takes place in a playing areameasuring 30 yards by 25 yards, with gates marked outby cones in the four corners.
The pitch is also dividedinto two vertical halves, as well as having channelsrunning between the gates.
Neutral players are able to score through the gates.
• The aim of the practice is to switch the play into aneutral player. The neutral player must drive throughone of the gates at the end of the channel to earn apoint for their team. The pass into the neutral player must come from the other half/lane . The defending team is not allowed to enter the widechannels and can only defend the middle "protect the middle". this then encourages success for the other team with the ball but also gives the idea of how to stop the switch.
COACHING DETAIL:
TECHNICALTYPE OF PASS• Players can learn and practise ways to switch play. firm ankle standing foot planted near the ball and punch through. ensure the speed of the ball is fast and in a position for opponent to receive. pass and move.
BODY SHAPE TO SWITCH• Players should try to face forwards when receiving theball, in order to have the right body shape to see andpass to a wide target. open body position to see oncoming players and offer the opportunity to switch.
BOUNCES & SETS• If facing the wrong way, players can aim to set andbounce the ball to teammates who are facing forwards.
