2v2 Wide Area Transition Game
Setup:
Area: 40x40 yards split into two wide channels (20x40 each).
2 goals placed wide on the right side of each grid to simulate wide-area attacks.
Two teams: Red (attackers) and Blue (defenders/counter-attackers).
Each round lasts 2 minutes 30 seconds.
Instructions:
Reds start with the ball. One red player plays a diagonal pass into the grid for their teammate to attack the goal in front of them .
The attacker can drive forward to score, or switch play to a teammate in the opposite grid.
If Blue wins the ball, they can counter quickly and score on either goal, using the full width of both grids.
After each 2:30-minute round, teams switch roles.
Coaching Points:
Quality of the Initial Pass
Weight and angle of the diagonal ball must allow the receiving attacker to take it in stride.
Encourage playing into space, not feet, to simulate a realistic wide run.
Decision Making
Can the attacker recognize when to drive and shoot vs when to switch play?
Head up after receiving—what’s the best option based on defender’s positioning?
Width and Depth
Encourage wide positioning to stretch the defenders and create space for 1v1s or switch of play.
Supporting player must provide good depth and timing of run.
Transition Speed
On loss of possession, how quickly can the Reds press or recover?
On regain, can Blues exploit unbalanced Reds with quick transition and decisive action?

If they don’t score, Red begins the next attack.
