General - Defend the final third - out of possession (25 mins)

Welsh way principles

Understand when and how to minimise space, deal with crosses/shots and protect space centrally in the defensive third.

Staying narrow and compact,

Fast pressure on the ball

Stop crosses at source

Defend the box

Put bodies on the line.

Pitch size and Organisation.

40 x 40 yrds.

Balls, bibs and cones.

1 x Goal, 2 x mini goals.

3 x 5 mins blocks ( then switch the 3 defenders)

Head coach - coaching the Blue side (  protect the middle, stay narrow and compact, force wide, bodies on the line )

Assistant coach - managing the red side ( ball speed, risk taking, final pass , finishing )

Explanation

The practice aims to challenge players ability to defend space in front of them and behind, whilst limiting attacking options

It is a basic 3v3 with the attackers looking to score and defenders looking to slow attackers down, limit their option, force wide or just stop the attack.

If the blue team gain the ball they can score in either of the 2 mini goals.( time restricted )

The third defender screens in front of the two centre backs, and is only allowed to defend the front half – as shown in the diagram.

When a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play the next 3 attackers start at the end line and drive in to score, attacking in waves of three. After the ball is secured by the defenders or goalkeeper, or the ball leaves the area, the next three attackers immediately drive in to begin attacking as the previous three attackers recover to their starting positions.

Managing Restarts: The practice involves for continuous waves of attacks against defenders. As a result, the likelihood of players cheating the restart is high. This may replicate different angles of attacks and challenge defenders in certain situations. Manage this if it starts happening.

Progressions

To progress the practice, impose positional roles on the attackers. For example, one of the attackers must start in the attacking half (as in the diagram) rather than at the end line.

Key Factors:

Defending the box

Learning Objectives:

Managing distance between defenders

Body Shape

Desire to defend

Interventions

Coaching Process: Demonstrate to players in certain scenarios how to manage distance between each defender.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Technical: Players out of possession will have to work on jockeying attackers and their body position when pressing the opposition or managing their space.
Technical Tactical
Players must think about the space they leave and create, as well as managing their teammates around them to adjust themselves tactically to manipulate the space their opponents have.
Technical Physical
The first practice involves a lot of physical output with the continuous style of the practice so that will involve 3 sets of 8 minutes of work to 3 minutes of rest.
Technical Psychological
Condition is that the ball must come from a wide area before scoring. Challenge the players to force the ball wide and not get split centrally.
Technical Social
Players will constantly have to communicate to teammates about organising themselves to limit space for attackers.

SSG - final third - out of possession - 30 mins. (30 mins)

Welsh way principles

Understand when and how to minimise space, deal with crosses/shots and protect space centrally in the defensive third.

Staying narrow and compact,

Fast pressure on the ball

Stop crosses at source

Defend the box

Put bodies on the line.

Pitch size and Organisation.

60 x 40 yrds. with 2 - 7 x 60 channels.

Balls, bibs and cones, flat markers.

2 x Goals.

2 x 15 min blocks

7 vs 7 (including the keepers)

3 x 8 minute blocks ( 3 minutes of rest in between ) 30 mins session.

Explanation.

Free play game

The only condition is that the ball must come from one of the designated wide areas to score. For example: lofted cross, pull-back, driven cross, front post or back post.

The game will allow the players to practise dealing with a variety of aerial balls, but also test their ability to protect the middle and force play wide then stop crosses and defend the box.

Progressions:

- The practice can be progressed by adding scoring systems for different types of goals. For example, if the players are poor at defending front-post (driven) crosses, then making a driven cross worth three goals will encourage the opposition to attempt this more often. This will then give the defenders the repetitions they need to improve.

Interventions:

Drive by's and fly by's.

Coaching Process.

Terminal.

Concurrent

Key points.

Out of possession (coaching)

Force direction of play, defend narrow, protect the middle, leave furthest player, stop/defend the cross, body on the line.

In possession (managing)

To help cause problems to enhance the session----Use the full width, ball speed, weight of pass, movement, combination play, final pass and finishing.

Coaching position.

The head coach may start at position a and assistant at position b, during the practise coaching positions will change and rotate so will also be in positions c & d.

This will obtain various angles to see the session, understand distances between players and to gather an all round feel for the practise.
