Warm up - Continuous / Dynamic Movement (10 mins)

ORGANIZATION:

All 16 players in or around the centre half circle.

7 Black team players and 1 keeper outside the circle each with a ball.  7 Blue team players and 1 keeper inside the circle.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Players on the outside each have a ball to begin. Blue players on the inside of the circle move towards a black team player, call for and receive the ball and play it back to the same player.   (Start by playing the ball on the ground and returning the ball with 2 touches.)   Inside players then move through the circle and find a different outside player to receive & pass with.  Every 2 minutes have the teams switch inside/outside roles.

GK's perform the same skills as the rest of the team.

OBJECTIVES:

Elevate the heart rate, physical movement, mental awareness, improve technical coordination.

A high volume of touches on the ball.

Focus on scanning and space awareness

Gradually Increase the tempo and intensity leading towards a more game-like situation.

PROGRESSIONS:

Progress to 1 touch ground passing

The coach will call out various instructions to focus on touch/control/passing with different body parts- control out of the ball in the air with the foot, control with the thigh, control with chest, control with head, heading back, volley or half volley passing.

the coach will call out various instructions for all the players when not in possession of the ball completing a range of dynamic body motions to ensure proper warmup. ( open and closing of gates, lunge steps, truck twist etc)

Have inside players receive the ball from an outside player, turn, create space, and pass the ball to a different outside player.

Reduce the number of soccer balls and have the inside players combine before passing the ball back to an outside player

 COACHING POINTS:

Encourage Black team players to utilize the available Flank as per the theme of the overall session.

Have players focus on situations and movement/actions around  and away from the ball, not just on the ball

The black team look to create width and depth from Primary and Secondary positions as soon as they gain possession to create opportunity for the quick attack from zone 3 to zone 4

Angle and Distance of supporting players around the ball and away from the ball-create space for passing lanes & to become an option

look fo cues- Read your teammates eyes, body mechanics and plant foot

PROGRESSIONS:

  • The 2 Black team Forwards must stay in zone 4 and 2 Black Team defenders must stay in zone 3. The CM and both wingers can move between zones.
  • Black team players can’t play the ball back from zone 4 into zone 3.
  • If Black wins possession of the Ball in Zone 3, they have 30 seconds  to progress the Ball to Zone 4 and score

Almost identical field set up as Initial game allowing for a quick transition.  Field changes 1) Create a 6-yard flank channel with disk markers. 2) Replace large goal at Black byline with 2 mini-goals. The field is now divided into zones 3 & 4 and a designated Flank

7 Black v 5 Blue to begin.(including Keeper for Blue Team)

Coach is positioned  behind  the black team players to see their viewpoint, initially on black team byline, but can move down the touchline as the play progresses from zone 3 to zone 4 for best viewing angle as the focus is on flank play

INSTRUCTIONS:

Regular scoring but the ball must be played by Black to the left flank zone before it can be played into the central area of the field while progressing from zone 3 to 4. Goals directly from a cross in zone 4 worth 2 points.

Blue team counter-attacks to mini-goals.

If the ball goes out on the left touchline but it is a Black possession, they can throw in and continue play. Any other restart ball is played in from Black team CB.

The Black team must move the ball out to the Flank channel for at least one touch before progressing the ball to the net.

COACHING POINTS:

Challenge Black team players how they can utilize the attacking principles penetration, support, width/depth, mobility, and creativity/improvisation to quickly penetrate the Blue team defence and progress the ball into zone 4 on the flank.

Timing and angle of runs into the wide-area by CM, W or F

Quality cross in Zone 4 into the box for F to play on to and passes  into CM

Angle and Distance of supporting players closest to ball and away from the ball

Speed of Play- 1st touch decision - see the picture in front of you early - scan

Penetration- Quick Attack focus so how can we quickly move the ball from zone 3 to zone 4 and create an optimal scoring opportunity.

PROGRESSION:

No offsides to begin.

Progression 1 Offsides in play, Blue adds additional Player

Progression 2 Blue adds additional Player

Can add time restraints on the Black attack to simulate the quick attack concept better)
