Principles and demands of the transitional phases from Attack to Defence and Defence to Attack

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation
16 Players
8v8 (Red v Blue)
Both setup in a 1-2-3-2 Formation (important to be similar for transitional pressures to be matched)
Half pitch plus 15m length with full size goal.
Red GK (green) play into any Red and attack Goal #1. Blues defend and try to win ball back and score into Goal #2. If fail to score for either team and ball goes dead, play from opposite team who last had possession.
Coach transitional phases.
Coaching Points
Adding from MDG principles.
Defensive;
Concentration and readiness to win the ball back
React quickly - first few seconds is vital
Try to win it back whilst other team are transitioning themselves (5-8 seconds)
Player closest to the ball must press aggressively
Attitude, mentality and immediate pressure is very important
Mark players around the ball - stop the short pass
Compact and balanced
Prevent opposition turning and finding space/gaps
Attacking;
Attack quickly
Look for runners to offer forward passing options
Move ball away from transition location; i.e. switch
Negate immediate pressure from opposition
Exploit defensive weaknesses within the opposition i.e. RM is caught upfield, attack that side
Create overloads in specific areas
Pitch geography considerations
End product; pass, shot or cross
Speed is vital
Progression(s)
Add in an extra CM for both teams; more bodies, less space, less time to react
Score/points system
Potential time limit for each attack

Organisation
15 Players
7v7 (Red v Blue) and 1 Neutral GK (Yellow)
*Let the teams decide on formation (part of learning process).
Recommended if unsure is 2-3-1
Half Pitch
1 Full Size Goal. 2 Small Goals split on Half Way.
Blue sets up as the defending team.
Reds sets up as the attacking team.
Neutral GK play ball into Red CB (replicate poor pass - loss of possession for Blues)
Reds to attack the Full Size Goal. Blues negate their attack. If Blues win possession, aim to score into the 2 smaller goals on Half Way.
If Reds score, reset starting position and play from GK again. If Blues reposses and score, Blues now become attacking team into full size goal and Reds defend and try to score into smaller goals.
Coach the transitional demands.
