Teach a player to force the play ina desired direction- INITIAL GAME (15 minutes)
Organization:
Full field game, 2 teams of 6 eachwith 1 GK.
A 3m x 3m yellow box on each side of the defending team’s 18 yardbox.
Coaching red while managing blue.
- Defenders (red) serve the ball into the attackers on the other side of thefield to begin the play.
- Attackers (blue) objective is to score.
- Defender’s objective: force attacker with the ball and supporting attackersinto the “yellow box”. This is the least dangerous area for the defenders.Their goal is to keep attackers in the box until they have enough playersbehind the ball to attack.
Key factors & progressions:
-Defenders should have perception of position on field, their teammates, and owngoal. Defender should angle out (jockey) the attacker away from middle of fieldand into the “yellow box”
- First defender closes down space to delay attacker.
- Second defender should be aware of position on field in order to cover spaceand passing lanes.
- Importance of having a compact shape in the middle and shifting as a unitwhen defending. This will force the attacking team to the “yellow box”.
- Defenders should have patience, stay on feet and work as a unit. Progression:time how long defending team can keep an attacker with the ball in the “yellowbox” for. Look to beat this time. Switch attacking and defending team after 7minutes.

Teach a player to force the play ina desired direction- ACTIVITY (20 minutes)
Organization:
Split half of the field up into 3grids
The first grid will be a 2v1, second grid 2v2, third grid 3v2
Coaching red, managing blue
- The attackers (blue) must score into the yellow gate.
- The first defender/defender closest to the ball (red) will look to quicklyshut down the space between them, jockey and ultimately force the attacker awayfrom their target.
- The second defender will look to support the other by moving into the middleand blocking off any passing lanes.
- Third defender looks to delay the progression of attackers
Key factors & progressions:
- Quick bending run from the firstdefender, yelling “ball”, to shut down the space and delay the progression ofthe attacker.
- First defender should shoulder check to ensure they have supportingdefender(s). Once in arm’s reach, angled body to keep attacker out. Ifsupporting defender is not close, first defender should not attempt a tackle, and remain delaying.
- Defender should have angled body and hips to outside of field, knees bent, ontoes, eyes on ball.
- Second defender must have perception of position on field in relation to thegoal. Their main goal is to block any open lanes to the net.
- Third defender ensures compactness with teammates in order to delayprogression of the attackers.
Progression:switchdefenders to different grids, switch attackers and defenders.

Teach a player to force the play ina desired direction- FINAL GAME (15-20 minutes)
Organization:
FIFA style game, norestrictions
Coaching red, managing blue
Red: 2-1-2 formation
Blue: 2-2-1 formation
Switch teams half way through.
2 GK
-Players execute what was learned in the session: first defender shoulder checksand shuts down space between themselves and attacker to delay, second defenderlooks to cover space to block any passing lanes, third defender looks to delayprogression of other attackers.
- Once in arm’s reach, accurate jockey positioning with angled body/hips toforce players to the outside of the field.
- Players should look to shift as a unit around the field, depending on theplayers on, off, and around the ball.
- Best time to force attackers outsideis when there are more defending players inside the field. If not enoughdefending players, delay progression by forcing inside until more players arebehind ball.

Topic:
Teach a player to force the play ina desired direction- WARMUP (10 minutes)
5 Steps for intervening during sessions to teach:
Freeze - stop the activity.
Recreate - recreate play.
Demo - demonstrate with team what you're looking for by having them do it.
Rehearse - go over the play.
Go live - resume training after they're successful.
For coaches, after explaining an activity it is important to be sure the team understands before beginning the activity. Please ask for their understanding.
Organization:
1.Set up 1 cone approximately 12 metres from an end line. Distance will depend onage and size of players. Players will divide into two side-by-side lines fordynamic stretching. High knees, butt kicks, shuffles, high kicks,opening/closing of the hips (3-4 minutes)
2. Divide players into two groups of 6for rondo with one defender in the middle. Players can be about 2 metres fromeach other to set up the circle. When the defender in the middle gets a touchon the ball, the outside player who last touched the ball is now in themiddle. (6-7 minutes)
Key Factors & progression:
1. Enforce players to take theirtime with dynamic stretching. Discuss the importance of warming up muscles toallow bodies to operate at 100% ability and to prevent injury.
2. Instruct players to keep moving while keeping the ball moving. Show how thedefender in the middle should not stray too far from the middle, but still keepa low, jockey position. Defenders should angle out the player with the ball tocut off one passing lane and attempt to keep the ball at one side. Defendershould stay light on their toes to ensure quick movements.
