Passing Pattern (10 mins)

Passing patern to start practice:

5 cones set up as above. two areas can be set up if numbers allow. Minimum 6 players in each area

Simple pass and move set up and add competition between groups or number of passes or balls that they can get moving in each area.

Coacing Points:

Receive the ball off the cone
Recieve side on to be able to play forward quickly
Recieve on the back foot
Follow your pass with speed to get into position to recieve

1 v 1 Carousel (20 mins)

Organisation:

Setup a 30 x 30 pitch with three channels with three different 1v1 games being played on each of the pitches.

 A) Attacker receiving with their back to goal to score. (Attacker plays ball into attacker)

 B) Attacker can dribble in and has two goals to score in that are next to each other. (Defender passes to attacker)

 C) Attacker can dribble in and has one goal to score in. Rotate who’s attacking and defending after a set time limit as well rotate who’s playing on each pitch. (Defender passes into attacker)

Depending on numbers you can play 3 going on at the same time as suggested or if numbers are lower 2 or 1 at a time is also fine.

Blocks - 2 mins per section then swap other. 6 x reps with 1 minute rest total time = 18 minutes

Coching Points:

  • Force the attacker one way- side facing stance, low centre of gravity
  • Defender needs to close the ball down quicklythen bend their knees (low centre of gravity) to be able to change direction with speed and balance
  • Once in position small steps to avoid being turned
  • Intercept the space - if the attacker takes them on use their nearest arm, hip or leg to intercept the space. DO NOT LUNGE AT THe BALL ESPICIALLY WITH BACK FOOT
  • Dont go to ground unless last ditch defending. Stay on their feet

Remember basic defending principles:

  • Deny space
  • Delay the attacker
  • Deflect the ball with nearest foot if possible
  • Defend - win the ball

Defending Game

Organisation:

This is can be played as a 6v6 plus goalkeepers (+2) game or if numbers are lower a 4 v 4 plus goalkeepers (+1 or +2 in middle). • Approximate dimensions for the pitch are 50m x 35m for older age groups and 40 x 30 for younger age groups. The middle channel is 10m deep.

In each end third, there is a 3v3 or a 2v2 with this being split into attackers and defenders evenly. In the middle zone, there are two neutral players. The diagram shows Team Blue playing from their defensive third into their attacking third and scoring a goal. • In order to move from one third to the other, the in-possession team must play through one of the neutral players in the middle third. • Once the ball enters the attacking third, one neutral player can join in to create a 4v3 in that zone. • If the out-of-possession team win the ball in their own third, they also have to play through a neutral player to advance. If they win it in the final third, they can try to score immediately.

Progression portions:

• You can also allow a player from the attacking third to recover into the defensive third to help defend.

  • Progress the practice by allowing a player from the defensive third to join the attack.
Coaching Points:
  • Force the attacker one way- side facing stance, low centre of gravity
  • Defender needs to close the ball down quicklythen bend their knees (low centre of gravity) to be able to change direction with speed and balance
  • Once in position small steps to avoid being turned
  • Intercept the space - if the attacker takes them on use their nearest arm, hip or leg to intercept the space. DO NOT LUNGE AT THe BALL ESPICIALLY WITH BACK FOOT
  • Dont go to ground unless last ditch defending. Stay on their feet
  • The 2nd defender or “covering defender” should position himself in a way that he can pressure the ball if the 1st defender is beaten on the dribble, but remain in a position that he can “close the space” on the 2nd attacker if the player on the ball chooses to pas
  • The 2nd defender must communicate if the ball is passed to the opposite player they must swap roles very quickly
  • Third needs to provide 'balance and cover' for the defending team and communicate to others.
  • Recovering defender needs to get back quick and cut off lines of passes to attacking options as quickly as possible
  • Blocks of 4 minutes with 90 sec rest. 4 x reps = total time 22 minutes.

At the end play a normal game with no conditions.
