Screen 1

Defending breaking lines - OOP - Specific practice

3 - 5 - 2 (Attacking) into a 2 - 3 - 2 (Blue)

4 - 2 - 3 - 1 (Defending) into a 4 - 2 - 1 (Twin screen) (Red)

Block 1:

Attacking objective 1: Ball will start from the coach with a first pass is free into the Number 10. Has to go through the central channel before they can score. Mimicking handling a creative number 10 on the ball.

Defending objective: Close central lanes early - protect the CB's. Focus on trying to stay compact.

Coaching points: Scan for the 10's movement. Utilizing the twin screen and making sure there are no gaps.

Block 2: Ball starts out wide - wingers are still trying to get the 10 on the ball but have to work a little harder to do so as now the full backs can put immediate pressure on the ball. Looking to try work compactly with a slightly different angle. Deny having the line broken 1 v 1.

Timing: 4 mins x 2 (Terminal intervention between blocks).

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression: If defending teams win it, 6 seconds to counter to mini goals. Give instruction to the 10 and 8's to rotate who is fulfilling that 10 role to cause more chaos in the midfield and force the twin screen to ensure they are organized. Allow them to roam freely.

Regressions:

Keep the 10 inside the central zone and restrict their movement.

Touch limitation for the attackers. Enforce a rule that the 10 must connect with another player before they can score (not allowed to just turn and score or run onto the ball and score).

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

- Can the two 6/8s prevent direct pass into the 10.

- Fullbacks get bonus points if they force attackers to play negative and re start.

- If they twin screen or CB deny the #10 from turning and only option is to play backwards they get an extra point

Conditions:

#10 must receive inside the central channel before they can score for block 1

Wide players must receive the ball in wide channel before they can attempt to break a line.

6 seconds to counter attack if they win it to mini goals.

Targets:

Big goal for the attackers, mini goals for the defenders.

In play target is to get to #10 on the ball

Point system:

+2 if #10 manages to turn and score

+1 if defenders force the play backwards

+2 if Defenders manage to defend and counter within 6 seconds.

Screen 2

Defending breaking lines - OOP - SSG

3 - 5 - 2 (Attacking) into a 2 - 3 - 2

4 - 2 - 3 - 1 (Defending) into a 4 - 2 - 1 (Twin screen)

Block 3:

Attacking objective 1: SSG - Ball will start with GK looking to get the #10 on the ball. A player on the attacking team must receive the ball within the square (central zone) before they can score.

Defending objective: If the defending team can stop the ball coming into central zone then they can try and score.

Coaching points: Scan for the 10's movement. Utilizing the twin screen and making sure there are no gaps. Close central lanes early - protect the CB's. Focus on trying to stay compact.

Timing: 8 mins coaching process when necessary.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression:

Touch limitation for attackers or certain players. Take away the central zone for the visual aid and have the pivots and CB identify that space. Encourage the #10 and the 6 and 8 to interchange more freely to create more chaos.

Regressions:

Keep the 10 inside the central zone and restrict their movement.

Touch limitation for the attackers. Enforce a rule that the 10 must connect with another player before they can score (not allowed to just turn and score or run onto the ball and score).

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

  • Attacking team connecting through the central channel to the 10 to break the line to score

  • Must go through the central channel to be able to score

Conditions:

  • If the attacking team breaks the line and the #10 receives between lines -2 points

  • If the #10 receives and turns - 3 points

  • Defenders able to counter attack in 8 seconds - 2 points

Targets:

- Break the line to score on big goal.

Interventions:

Walkthrough at the beginning with the ball demonstrating what it will look like to get the 10 on the ball and them receive on a half turn and walkthrough the defenders on, around and away of what a successful rep will look like and how to defend against it. (One screen, one step higher).

Coaching process - Stopping and coaching mistakes but also potentially one good moment from a drill to reinforce coaching points

Terminal - between the blocks I will introduce the next progression or regression and leave the players where they are in their positions but make sure I am addressing on, around and away.

Concurrent - praise what I see. Ensuring it is informative with instruction.
