Block 1 (10 mins)

Key Factors

Problem

  • The Reds' back four drop off and aim to play out from the back.
  • The Red front two stay high, pinning the Blue center-backs, creating a 4v3 numerical advantage for the Reds in central areas.
  • The Red CDM drops deep to receive the ball and play around the Blue striker.

Solution

  • The Blue ST directs play one way, forcing the ball toward the full-back.
  • As the pass is made, the Blue winger aggressively presses the opposite full-back, forcing a long ball or a pass backward.
  • If the ball goes backward, the Blue ST immediately presses the Red CB.
  • The opposite Blue midfielder steps up to press the Red CDM.
  • The Blue LW positions between the CB and FB, while the opposite Blue FB tucks in to maintain compactness.

Key Coaching Points

  • Early organization
  • Clear communication
  • Managing space between players and units
  • Correct angles of approach
  • Constant scanning (checking shoulders)
  • Proper distance from the ball and opponent

What Ifs?

  • The Blue ST can't apply pressure on the CB?
    • If the CB plays around the ST, the opposite CB and LB create a 2v1 situation against the Blue LW.
    • In this case, if pressure on the ball is lost, force play into the channel, where we maintain a 3v2 numerical advantage at the back

Block 2 (10 mins)

Key Factors

Problem

  • The Red CM moves into a false full-back position, allowing the Red full-back to push higher.
  • This positioning aims to pin the Blue winger back and remove a Blue midfielder from the central area.

Solution

  • The Blue winger holds position and does not track the advancing full-back.
  • The ball-side Blue CM steps up to press the Red CDM, ideally forcing a backward pass to the center-back.
  • This triggers the Blue ST to press and reinforce the defensive structure.

Key Coaching Points

  • Early organization
  • Clear communication
  • Managing space between players and units
  • Correct angles of approach
  • Constant scanning (checking shoulders)
  • Proper distance from the ball and opponent

What Ifs?

  • If there is not enough pressure on the ball and we become 3v3 at the back
    • The opposite full-back stays deeper rather than pushing high, creating a 4v3 defensive advantage.
