Introduction (20 mins)

Organization:

  • Two 20x10 yards channel.
  • 1v1 in each channel (progression is 2v1 with mini goals).
  • Teams can rotate to play each team once.
  • W/R/S: 4m / 1m / 3 (each team attacks for 2m).

Instructions:

  • 1v1: teams score by beating opponent and dribbling past the endline. If defender disrupts play, they can score by dribbling on opponent's endline. Reps should last no more than 6 seconds.
  • 2v1: teams score on mini goal.

Technical Coaching Points:

  • Engage defender. Dribble with ball close to body, eyes on defender's hips (aware of own space with ball).
  • In 1v1 use upper body parts to unbalance 1st defender.
    • 1st defender stance will have weight on own legs (most strength for defender is there).
    • 1st attacker can combine upper body movements to unbalance (drop shoulder one way, go the other).
  • When making a decision to leave defender behind, use body to protect ball and accelerate as the move takes place (lower head and sprint forward).

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • It's important to engage defender to make them think.
    • Recognize defender's movement to quickly unbalance.
    • Recognize where pressure comes from.
  • In 2v1, use 2nd attacker as a passing option or decoy.
    • If 1st defender closes space down on 1st attacker, 2nd attacker has more space to receive.
    • If 1st defender floats between both attackers, 1st attacker must engage (for a 1v1 or to make defender commit and open space for teammate).

Progressions & Regressions:

  • 2v1: three 4-minute intervals (each team attacks for 2 minutes). Teams can rotate to play each other once.
