SSG with Restrictions to encourage 1v1 defending.
ORGANIZATION: 6 v 6 or 7 v 7 with GK's and bow nets, rotate positions, use retreat line (orange cones).
Have players play a regular SSG, with the only restriction being that each player can only take the ball
away from one player from the other team (everyone is paired up)
Other Possible restrictions to encourage 1v1 defending: mark out end zones on the side of the pitch and
encourage defenders to force the ball out wide.
Coaching points: Defending - Technical (angle of approach, low center of gravity, wait for bad touch)
Tactical: : Force the attacker away from dangerous areas, and how it needs to be done. Knowing where
the dangerous areas on the field are
Psychological: Confidence/ PATIENCE (not always jumping in), positive attitude.
Social/Emotional: Understanding the need for communication when holding shape with team, critical thinking.
Physical: How to use their body to help defend, using correct speed of approach.

defending 1 v 1
Attacker (Blue) starts with ball on red cone and attacks the net with
with speed. The defender (Red) runs out to meet the defender, who is
responsible for looking to keep the attacker away from the goal
and win the ball . if the defender wins the ball , he is looking to
dribble and score in the opposite goal. If attacker loses the ball,
then attacker must defend and look to win the ball back.
coaching points - move to the attacker with speed, angle of
approach, Delay, body position, win ball
eyes on ball.
PROGRESSION: Add a time constraint for the attackers, and reward
the defenders for successfully delaying the ball.
PROGRESSION: Change to a 2v2 where 2 attackers go at the same time,
and one defender starts behind the two attackers for pressure behind their backs
with a 5 second delay.

6 players with a ball and 6 players without a ball.
Players will begin to pass and move, when the coach says go,
a player without a ball has to close down and get touch tight to a
player with a ball .The player with the ball needs to dribble around
or get away from the player without a ball.
Coaching points : needs to be real pressure , game speed, angle
of approach, defender needs to force attacker to the outside, watch
the ball.
2 players cannot pressure the same player, it needs to be 1 v 1.
Player without the ball needs to keep pressure on for 10
seconds then we go back to pass and move
