This small sided game is the defensive aspect of breaking lines.
Football Association of Wales (2023). suggests that small sided games are beneficial for young and developed players.
Children are also much more involved in the game and enjoy it much more than playing on a large pitch. Fewer players on the pitch and smaller teams ensure that each participant gets more individual attention (Football Association of Wales 2023).
Welsh way principles- fast pressure on the ball, protect the middle, stay narrow and compact, stop split passes, protect the space behind.
Game Explanation- this sag will be a 6v6 2 goalkeepers, There sections of the pitch and the players will stay in these sections for the first 5 minutes of the game the players will be locked into their sections. this will encourage the defending side to try and stay narrow and compact.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): Progressions- when the players are then allowed to move into the different sectors of the pitch there will be a maximum of 3 players for the team in possession in each zone so it creates an overload in that part of the pitch. This then progresses the defending as the the players defending within that sector of the overload will have to try and become even more compact to not allow the passes through them.
Regressions- limit numbers back to 2 each zone for each team and also limit touches for attackers.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges- can we try and stay compact and stop passes through the team and force the attacking team to go around or over.
Conditions- after winning the ball the defending has 7 seconds to score, Attacking team has a maximum of 3 touches
Targets- can the defending team win the ball back and create a chance with a counter attack. Can the defending team intercept 5 passes

El Kadi, T., (2024) state that, often utilised to beat opponents' heavy press or create opportunities that could lead to a goal. These passes are referred to as line breaking passes.
Game Explanation- For this small sided game the balls will start with one of the goalkeepers they will play with the emphasis of breaking lines. The red cones are there to emphasise the lines and show the players each third of the field.
The thirds will allow the players to see the lines of the opposition and will give a general basis for the players to understand the session topic.
Welsh Way Principles- Understand on when to play around, through or over.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): Progressions- point system- extra points if the players are able to score after breaking a line.
Captains for each team encourage communication.
Regressions- as the session needs good passing then there may need to be work on the technical part so limit the number of players allowed in each zone this would mean just leave it to 2v2s in each zone until the players are comfortable.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges: Challenge- is for the team in possession to keep the ball while looking to break the line.
Conditions: Time constraints- example 5 seconds to move the all and try break a line-encourages less time on the ball, also will require players to move ball quicker and look to be more dynamic and look to break a line.
Targets- Point system for breaking a line- 1 point for playing around, 2 points for playing over and 3 points for playing through one of the opposition lines.
