Act 1: Ball Mastery

Start with partner tag game then go into ball mastery. BM = dribble from each side of the box performing a turn every time you get to an edge of the box. Do skills in between and evade others.

Skills focused on turning to escape pressure. 1) inside/outside cuts 2) V cuts (in front and behind) 3) Step over turn

Coaching Points:

  • Change of Speed (slow then fast) / Change of Direction (shifty left to right)
  • Get low to explode
  • Deception is key - sell the fake
  • Scan before skill, Head up after skill

Act 2: 1v1

1v1 4 Goal Game. Roughly 24x18 with goals a couple steps in from sideline. 8 or less players = 1 grid / 9 or more = 2 grids. Attacker and defender must touch center cone before pass can come in (encourage movement away from cone once you touch it). Progress to team competition for most goals in a certain time limit.

Coaching Points:

  • Movement to create space to receive (check to, start behind, run across, spin behind, double movements)
  • Protect the ball to be able to to turn with the ball 
  • HHH - Hands, Hips, Hide (Hands = feel to def/maintain distance / Hips = sideways on to increase distance / Hide = keep body between ball and defender to hide the ball)
  • Change of Speed / Change of Direction 
  • Scan - Can I score?

Same set up - make the space bigger if needed. Now once the passer plays the ball they join the game as well as the defender waiting in line.

Coaching Points: 

  • Reinforce previous points with central players
  • Movement of support player - when to provide supporting angle vs. when to get forward
  • Movement off of each other to threaten both goals and create overloads
  • Attacking mentality - take risks, look to get forward

Act 3: Shotagon

3v3 in the middle (GK + 2 field players) + 4 players on the outside. Attacking team has 5v3 overload in possession. Field is octagon shape (roughly 25x20) to encourage more shooting. Outside players can shoot 1st time - if outside player takes a touch then they must pass (encourage rebounds). Rotate outside players every 3-4 minutes / Rotate GK's during game. If ball goes out coach plays new ball in. Compete first to certain score or time limit.

  • Attack mindset - get forward, look to score
  • Be creative/take risks/try skills
  • Scan / Head up - be aware of surroundings
