Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Defending techniques, learning when to pressure the player with the ball and not rushing or diving into a challenge.
Technical Tactical
Understand when to screen as a team, keeping narrow and assist when there is an overload in central or wide areas. Recognise overlapping runs, player movements and keeping focus on distances between defenders, Goalkeepers, pitch area and geography.
Technical Physical
High intensity Specific/SSG to create realism keeping ball rolling time at a high level.
Technical Psychological
Confidence to put pressure on the ball in tight areas to give motivation and keep their attention.
Technical Social
Communication through the session between players and GK to understand opposition movement and when to screen centrally or wide, this taking into consideration GK position to also offer support.

Specific Practice- Organisation

Mode- Specific: (4 x 4 Minutes with 4 x 1 mins breaks to use interventions) This may vary due to age/ability of players & physical demands.

Welsh Way Principles: Understand when and how to deal with numerical advantages from the opposition.

Organisation / Area Size:

-Area size: Half Pitch

-1 Large Goal- 2 Mini Goals at opposite end.

-Play 8v7 GK on the Red team with 8 in a 1-4-2-1

-Play Blue team 2xCM, 1 Defender, #10 #9 and 2 wide players

-Coach AG to rotate around the pitch changing position while coaching Reds.

-Coach JL to manage Blue team.

Key Points- Learning Objectives-

-Recognise player movement

-Protect the middle

-Leave the furthest players

-Force opposition wide

-Distances between defenders/Goalkeepers pitch area and geography

Organisation:

Ball always starts from Blue player who feeds the ball into a CM Blue players #6 or #8.

Reds must prevent the Blues from scoring and defend against the the overloads centrally and wide. Back 4 defenders and keeper are to screen across with support from CM if and when ball plays wide and remembering to leave the last man to help defend the overload.

Aim for the blue team is to attack the reds in the final third and try to play overload combinations through shaded zone, Blues can play to #9 or #10 or play wide to #7 #11 create goal scoring opportunity.

Only 1 wide Player #7 or #11 on Blue team can enter shaded area to create an overload and only 1 players #9 or #10 can drop in deeper to receive.

Challenges/progression Blue Team:

Extra goal for the Blues if they score by the ball going through shaded zone.

Blues have 5 seconds to finish once the ball enters the final third.

Extra goal for the blues if they score from a cross.

Challenge/progression Red Team: Reds have 5-7 seconds to score a point playing the ball to the Red number 10 to promote realism (Sub-principle- Welsh way- Breaking Lines- Play through- around- over)

Reds can earn extra point if the ball played to number 10 and scores into either mini goal.

If reds win possession, the #10 player can drop in to support the attack- replicates the #10 dropping in to support. If the Blue players bounce passes back to #4, Red player #10 can intercept to create realism and earn a point in the small goals.

Interventions:

Emphasis on Walk-Through and Coaching Process with Concurrent and Terminal Feedback given throughout where required.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Problem 1

Problem 1

Key Points:

In possession- #8 and #6 position themselves on the outside of the two deep lying red midfielders who are staying tight, Blue #9 drops centrally into the empty channel to receive.

Out of Possession - Protect shaded zone, keep the ball in front, force sideways and backwards passes, pressure and cover. Back 4 keep narrow centrally, communicating with keeper and screen over when the play has shifted wide. (width of the 18 yard box).

What If:

The #8 and #6 position themselves on the outside of the two deep lying midfielders?

Solution:

The #6 and #8 for the reds should not get drawn out of their compact shape and keep narrow in order to protect the central area/zone and stop the pass getting played into the #9 of the blues. This will then force the blues to play sideways or backwards.

If the Blue players bounce passes back to #4, Red player #10 can intercept to create realism and earn a point in the small goals.

Problem 2

Key Points

In possession - #8 and #6 position themselves on the outside of the two deep lying red midfielders to open up the channel for the #9 to drop in and receive.

Out of Possession - Protect shaded zone, keep the ball in front, force sideways and backwards passes, pressure and cover. Back 4 keep narrow and GK to be available to assist if needed  (width of the 18 yard box).

What If:

The #9 for the blues drops into zone to receive a pass from the #4 for the blues?

Solution:

One of the centre backs should get tight and go with the #9 to stop him turning on the ball. As the centre back presses the full backs and other centre back narrow up to provide cover in order to close any gaps and prevent any through pass going into the final third.

If the Blue players bounce passes back to #4, Red player #10 can intercept to create a point in the small goals.

Problem 3

Key Points:

In possession - #6 and #10 position themselves on the outside of the two deep lying red midfielders to receive off the #4 on the back-foot to play into the final third.

Out of Possession - Protect shaded zone, keep the ball in front, midfielder force attacking midfielder wide, pressure and cover. Back four keep narrow (width of the 18 yard box).

What If:

The #4 blues cannot pass into the #9 who has dropped into shaded area but then plays a pass into the #8 or #11 who receive on the back-foot and can play through the shaded zone creating an overload of 3 Blues v 2 Red CM.

Solution:

The closest deep lying midfielder gets across and forces the blue midfielder away from zone, specifically into the wide areas. The deep lying midfielder does this as the blue midfielder takes his first touch forwards. As that happens, the other deep lying midfielder screens the pass off into the #9 so if the ball goes backwards the ball cannot be played through and also to provide cover. Detail in the body position of the covering midfielder- side on so they can see the ball and the play in front. The back four/GK start to screen across to the direction where the midfielder is being forced into, leaving the furthest man. If the Blue players bounce passes back to #4, Red player #10 can intercept or block passing lines back to the 4 to create realism and earn a point if he can score in mini goals.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Problem 4

Problem 4

Key Points

In Possession - Width and depth, good deliveries into the box, timing of runs, decision making and composure around the box.

Out of Possession - Leave the furthest man, travel as the ball travels, pressure and cover, stop the cross, force the play backwards.

What If:

The blues cannot play through shaded zone and decide to play the ball quickly into wide areas, they try playing into the zone from wide to create an overload of 3v2 with Blue player #11 entering the zone.

Blue can also bounce pass the ball back to player #4 who may choose to switch play in a U shape if no overload can be utilised or to try and switch play (welsh way principles) to #11.

Solution:

The nearest Red full back #2 to the wide blue player should be ready to anticipate the ball going wide and travel as the ball moves to put pressure on the blue wide player #7, to stop him getting the ball into the zone or running the channel and crossing to create a goal scoring opportunity. As he does this, the back 3 including GK move across to close the gaps and leave the furthest man, The #6 and #8 also come across to screen the pass into the #6 and also into one of the blue midfielders (ball side, goal side).

If the Blue player #7 bounce passes back to #4 Red player #10 can intercept to create a point in the small goals.

Problem 5

Key Points

In Possession - Width and depth, good deliveries into the box, timing of runs, decision making and composure around the box.

Out of Possession - Leave the furthest man, travel as the ball travels, pressure and cover, stop the cross, force the play backwards.

What If:

The Blue #4 plays the ball into #7 and #6 Blue steps out of zone which creates a 2v1 in the channel against the red full back?

 Solution:

If the red #2 engages with blue #7 red #6 stays touch tight to blue #6 forcing play away from goal while the 2 CB reds keeping narrow with blue #9 & #10. If the overlap occurs either the red #4 screens the overlap and #8 drops in to mark blue #9 or adapting to the situation red #10 can drop deeper to cover blue #8 to help support and ready for possible cross.  The full back should stay with the wide attacking forward and track his run inside if needed. The goalkeeper for the reds should also anticipate any threat in the wide areas and be prepared to move up or across his goal line area a few yards to anticipate a cross coming into the box.

SSG 1

SSG - 20mins- 2x10 sessions 9v8 & 9v9 on the next frame

Reds Team- Worked backed from 11v11 working in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation but taking away #7 #11

Blue Team- Worked back from 11v11 working a 1-4-2-3-1 taking away #2 #3  and adding a #5 from specific session

Organisation:

Pitch will be extended 15 yards and marked off as shown on diagram.

A Blue goalkeeper and a Blue central defender will be added to allow for the 9v8.

The Red number #10 will now become their striker.

Team in Possession:

Will be asked to force conditions on the team out of possession.

Blue goalkeeper to always play wide to increase the distance for the red striker to recover.

When attacking down one wing can the opposite full back stay high and wide, to create the overloads on both sides of the pitch.

cb's #4 #5  will be encouraged to split and try to get on the ball and drive forward.

As they commit the first player they should have an overload in that wide area.

Players will need to commit the players out wide fast, putting pressure to allow for more success. If they do not do it quick enough it will allow the defending players more of an opportunity to screen across and cover.

No touch limit on players.

No time limit on players.

Team out of Possession:

Recognise the opposition movement to prevent overload.

Press quickly.

Asked to protect the middle and work as a unit.

Will always be asked to leave the furthest players and force players wide.

Defend the box and stop any crosses.

Body positioning (side on for flexibility of movement)

Distances between defenders/pitch area and geography.

Can the players look to recognise the movement of the extra player quickly.

Recognise player movement off the ball/rotation.

Coach points recognising overlapping/under-lapping runs and how to deal with this - Key focus on distances between defenders/pitch area and geography.

Throughout the practice the red team will be asked to press high if there is pressure on the ball to give the team in possession more to think about, if no pressure on the ball they should drop back in there compact shape.  (The keeper should look to try and play over  for the team in possession  into the spaces left in wide areas if he can).

SSG 2

SSG - 20mins -  9v9

Organisation:

The red #9 will drop into the session to make the session more realistic, his main role will be to screen passes from the #4 and #5 whilst also starting the press and forcing the ball back to the keeper and give reds a focal point. This will also allow red #10 to drop deeper to help support.

were hoping a lot of the coaching would of been done by this time and the red team will be able to press a bit higher now to create goal scoring opportunities

Team in Possession:

Will be asked to force conditions on the team out of possession.

Blue goalkeeper to always play wide to increase the distance for the reds striker to recover.

When attacking down one wing can the opposite full back stay high and wide to create the overloads on both sides of the pitch.

cb's #4 #5 will be encouraged to split and  to get on the ball and drive forward.

As they commit the first player they should have an overload in that wide area or play into central area creating overload.

Players will need to commit the players wide or centrally fast to allow for more success. If they do not do it quick enough it will allow the defending players more of an opportunity to move across and cover or stay narrow centrally.

2/3 touch limit on the players in possessions.

Progressions and regressions of time limits added on players as the sessions develops and coach to adapt.

Team out of Possession:

Recognise the opposition movement to prevent overload centrally or wide.

Press quickly.

Asked to protect the middle and work as a unit.

Will always be asked to leave the furthest players and force players wide.

Defend the box and stop any crosses.

Coach points recognising overlapping/under-lapping runs and how to deal with this - Key focus on distances between defenders/pitch area and geography.

Throughout the practice the Blue will be asked to press high to give the team in possession more to think about (The keeper for the team in possession can then play over the top into the spaces left in wide areas).
