Passing Patterns

Method:

1:

Players play pass, then follow their pass

A to B, B to C, C to D, D to E - then e dribbles to F

Have two balls going at same time

Note: After a minute or two, change direction. This means players pass with both feet.

2:

Bounce passes -

A to B, B bounce back to A

A to C, C bounce back to B

B to D, D bounce back to C

C to E, E bounce back to D

Coaching Points:

  • Good weight and accuracy of pass, towards players back foot
  • Communication - call players name. Receiving player show player with hand where the want the ball played
  • Keep nose over the ball and kick through the middle of the ball. Follow through towards where you want the ball to go - that will keep it on the floor
  • Control with back foot, pass with the other foot

Rondo - 4 v 2

Method:

4 v 2 or 5 v 2 rondo

GREEN Outside players move between cones, creating passing lanes

RED players must press players and try to win the ball back. They should work together.

Coaching Points:

Control on back foot and play with opposite foot - this is the quickest way to move the ball

Wide Attacking Play

Method:

  • Green players in shaded area play passes to each other
  • Then one player passes the ball out wide to either player 1 or A
  • Players 1 & A lay the ball back to players 2 & B, who cross into box
  • Players in shaded area run into box. One player goes towards front post, one in middle, one back post and one holds back at edge of the box for a cut back
Progression 1: Add opposition players into the shaded area, so it's 4 v 1 or 4 v 2. They have to get a certain amount of passes before they can play it out wide

Progression 2: Add defenders in box

Coaching Points:

  • Good weight and accuracy of pass, towards players back foot
  • Communication - call players name. Receiving player show player with hand where the want the ball played
  • Keep nose over the ball and kick through the middle of the ball. Follow through towards where you want the ball to go - that will keep it on the floor
  • Control with back foot, pass with the other foot
  • For long passes out to wide players use top of foot and drive through ball
  • Players crossing should curl the ball so keeping it away from the goalkeeper. Ideally in between the 6 yard box and the peno spot
  • During match situation, opposite winger should be in the box, at the back post, when other winger is crossing
