1v1 with recovery defender (20 mins)

Using half field with two big goals, players line up to the right of the goal with a ball each as shown above.

i) Players in lines A & B set off running with the ball to goal.

ii) Once player crosses the midway point, goalkeepers play them 1v1 imitating a breakaway.

iii) As soon as the first player in line A & B cross the midway point, the next player in line goes.

iv) After your breakaway, collect your ball and join the end of the other line to attack the other goal.

REPEAT.

Adv, Give attacker 6-seconds to get the shot away, but must cross the midway point.

Coaching Points

1) Preparation: Stand 3-4 yards off the goal line, watch attacker for clues; Is he L or R footed?,How fast is he? Does he look up regularly? Does he look confident?

2) Approach: Once the ball crosses the midway point, analyze; Is the ball close to attackers feet? APPROACH. Ball is close to feet? STAY SET FOR SHOT. Does he take a touch? APPROACH. Prepares to shoot? STAY SET FOR SHOT.

3) Angles: As you approach the ball 1v1, curve your run to eliminate the near post shot. Make the shot difficult for attacker.

4) Breakaway Save: Can you get to the ball BEFORE the shot? AS the shot is taken? REACT to the shot being taken. Avoid gaps under your body and always attack the ball with hands and arms flexed.
