3v2 small-sided game, with a goal and goalkeeper at each end. Into a Game 6v6
• Both teams must attempt to score in the opposite goal
under pressure from the defence.
• If an attacking team scores, they retain possession and
the next phase starts with that team’s goalkeeper.
• If the defending team wins possession, they become the
attacking team until the phase is over.
• New players enter the pitch for every new phase.
Coaching points
RANGE OF PASSING
• As the defending team is pressing aggressively, this
may open up chances to play over the top, including
from the goalkeeper. Attackers should recognise this as
early as possible.
SECOND MOVEMENTS
• If an attacker makes a movement and fails to receive
possession, they should make a second movement to
attempt to create another supporting angle.
OUT OF POSSESSION
SHOWING PLAY AWAY FROM GOAL
• The defending team should be encouraged to show
play away from goal. They can do this by positioning
their body in a way that encourages the attackers to go
down the outsides. They should then recognise when to
steal and when to block shots.
COUNTER-PRESS
• If the team in possession loses the ball, they should
apply an aggressive counter-press to prevent any shots
at goal and aim to win it back as soon as possible.

PASS DETAIL
• Passes must be punched in with the correct weight and accuracy. Players must look to play into the receiving player’s back foot, to allow them to play forward on their second touch.
MOVEMENT TO RECEIVE
• Players are encouraged to start on the outside of their opponent’s shoulder – here represented by mannequins – before taking up a position to receive beyond.
IMING OF MOVEMENT
• Players must look to arrive as late as possible, while taking up the correct body shape to allow them to receive on the back foot.
CHECKING SHOULDERS
• Players must ensure they check their shoulders prior to receiving the ball, to ensure they are in enough space to receive. QUALITY OF FIRST TOUCH
• Players should be encouraged to take positive first touches when receiving on the end mannequins, to replicate getting away from defenders in a match-like scenario. This will be evident in the first progression.
